Greening Barren Stretches In Roads

by George Zacharia | 24-04-2018 02:11

I would like to share with you an exemplary project being carried out by a responsible group of youngsters in Trivandrum.

They include engineers, doctors. etc and are doing something during their free time and I must say they are visionary.

There are middle barren stretches between two roads in the main highways here and mostly it lays empty everywhere.

These youngsters have started planting plants in these stretches. They come on Sunday, early mornings by 6:30 am.

They start planting different plants along the stretches. People who see it during their morning walks or while driving, come over and help these people out too.

They also give awareness to nearby residents on importance of planting trees, especially citing recent natural disasters like Okhi, social erosion, clean air, etc and also encourage them to daily water the plants. If the residents don?t take the initiative of watering, the youngsters themselves come in mornings and do the needful.

So far, they have been able to plant over 800 trees. They have named their initiative as ?The Green Initiative- The Power Of Common Man?.

For Vishu (Malayalam New Year), they planned a massive tree planting of 350 trees. Volunteers from Students for the Earth chapter in my college also went to volunteer in this awesome programme.

They all enjoyed it.

I believe if we can all make small changes, it can all coalesce to form big impacts.
