SAVING TREES

by Hajira Usman | 21-04-2018 03:23

What Kind of Times Are These

There's a place between two stands of trees where the grass grows uphill
and the old revolutionary road breaks off into shadows
near a meeting-house abandoned by the persecuted
who disappeared into those shadows.

I've walked there picking mushrooms at the edge of dread, but don't be fooled
this isn't a Russian poem, this is not somewhere else but here,
our country moving closer to its own truth and dread,
its own ways of making people disappear.

I won't tell you where the place is, the dark mesh of the woods
meeting the unmarked strip of light—
ghost-ridden crossroads, leafmold paradise:
I know already who wants to buy it, sell it, make it disappear.

And I won't tell you where it is, so why do I tell you
anything? Because you still listen, because in times like these
to have you listen at all, it's necessary
to talk about trees.

(A poem by Adrienne Rich on the significance of trees.)

31% of Earth's land area is covered by forests. Trees maintain oxygen levels in the air by breathing in CO2. Approximately 48 pounds of CO2 can be absorbed by mature trees, releasing oxygen to support two human beings. Trees lower the 'heat island' effect with their provision of shade. Tress  aid in lowering the ozone levels in urban areas, also preventing noise pollution by absorbing sound.

20% of the global CO2 emission is caused due to deforestation that plays a significant role in the greenhouse effect. This free CO2 results in disturbed climate patterns. Biodiversity is highly affected due to deforestation as the habitat of various species is destroyed. Tropical rain forests hold 80% of the world's enlisted species and diminishing the forest cover threatens wildlife. Disrupted water cycles and increased soil erosion are also the aftermath of deforestation. Furthermore, several social problems, like cultivation and harvestation becomes limited.

In order to form a sustainable world and eco-friendly atmosphere, deforestation should be banned. The initial way to save trees is by adapting sustainable choices in our daily lives e.g. by using recyclable products, eating sustainable food, spreading awareness about trees and their impact in our lives and the environment. The government of respective countries should generate policies in favor of tree plantation, organize awareness campaigns and should pass laws against deforestation. Every person in the community should grow trees and raise their voice against the factors affecting their environment.

Paper products account for 40% of the wood harvest.  Reducing use of paper can result in a lower rate of deforestation. This can be practiced in several ways e.g. by shifting the paper work on a digital platform, by taking paper reduction initiatives and usage of erasable or reusable boards. Adapting a digital platform will improve data safety and communication efficiency.

In Pakistan 1,902,000 hectares or  2.5% of land is forested. It amounts to an average deforestation rate of 2.1%. With regards to biodiversity 5.5% of the species located here are threatened. The role of the government and non-government organizations need to be improved to prevent deforestation and play an active role in environmental care. However, there are several projects being conducted to encourage tree plantation, usgae of ecofriendly products and awarness regarding deforestation on a community, state and national level.
