INADEQUATE SANITATION FACILITIES IN ZAMBIA

by Bwalya Bwalya | 03-03-2018 20:59

It is very sad to note that a large population of people living in Zambia does not have access to clean water and also proper sanitation facilities. It is unfortunate to see that sanitation facilities are also very poor in many basic schools especially in rural areas. Not having access to proper sanitation leads to diseases such as diarrhoea, cholera and many other similar diseases. School dropout rates are generally high especially for the girl child because there are very filthy toilets or washrooms. Furthermore, there is a high number of pupils per toilet which leads to poor upkeep of sanitation facilities. This makes the overall performance of girls really low. It is then extremely important that sanitary facilities are improved so as to prevent children especially girls from staying away from school. In addition to the aforementioned, hygiene education must be taught in schools as well as on the radio and television stations. Furthermore, community sensitization programs must be carried out so as to educate people about the importance of maintaining hygienic conditions and also the risks that come about when such is avoided.Various Non Profit Organizations, Companies and Institutions must also come on board and partner with the government so as to develop better hygienic solutions. This will not only result into improved sanitation and health, better water quality but also a high productivity rate.
