    What does a 5day experience, physical and mental activities and learning about water and its dynamics sum up to? AQUA ENDURO. Aqua Enduro is a Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) innovative initiative aimed at addressing the skills shortage in the Scientific & Engineering disciplines within the water sector at grass roots level. This competition has been on going since 2008 and it is still going strong! Aqua Enduro seeks to bring together grade 11 learners from around the country for a 5-day event filled with mental & physical challenges aimed at exposing them to what the water sector entails while learning about its importance. A venture into the community is exercised to raise awareness of water quality by the learners themselves. Last year, Six maths and science pupils from schools around the province excelled in the Department of Water and Sanitation's Aqua Enduro Competition, at the Roodeplaat Training Centre from December 5 to 9. The learners performed exceptionally well in both the physical and mental activities during the national competition. 20 Pupils are selected after intensive activities and interviews, which tested all their capabilities to learn about the water sector while still having fun. In 2012, I also partook in this competition and I was chosen as the team leader for my province. The week long competition truely tests one's stamina and will to endure through perseverance, as well as one's communication and leadership skills. My team came is Second place and we received a floating trophy. Results for the 20 bursary winners was released in January the following year and 4 of the 6 learns from my province were awarded a scholarship to study at any university of their choice. And now, 4 years later we are now pursuing a career in a water-and-sanitation-related field at DWS. 2018 is no different, applications will be open soon!
