by Baekjin Kim | 27-02-2024 15:30

In Saudi Arabia, Vision 2030 is a prominent project led by the Saudi Arabian government. With multiple objectives, Vision 2030 strives to make Saudi Arabia a better country in all aspects. Specifically, the project also has a goal to improve the environmental status in Saudi Arabia. The Saudi Green Initiative is one of the projects that is focused on combating climate change and protecting the environment for future generations.

According to Vision 2030, the Saudi Green Initiative was launched in 2021 by Prince Mohammed Bin Salman Bin Abdulaziz, with the plan of uniting all sustainability efforts in the country. SGI¡¯s main objective is to reach net zero emissions by 2060 through the Circular Carbon Economy approach and is also accelerating the country¡¯s transition to a green economy, according to Vision 2030. Overall, they seek to guide the country¡¯s emission reduction, afforestation, and land and sea protection.

The SGI¡¯s immediate objectives are stated in the Vision 2030 website. Their specific goal is to reduce carbon emissions by 278mtpa by 2030. Moreover, Saudi Arabia is a country covered by the Arabian Desert, in which they struggle with the lack of trees and forests. Hence, they plan to plant 10 billion trees over the coming decades, equal to rehabilitating 40 million hectares of land. Lastly, their third major objective is to protect 30% of Saudi Arabia¡¯s land and sea by 2030, by not polluting these areas through urbanization or by population shifts.
