February Free Report : The story of our unpredictable weather: Climate change

by Sumayyah Sheriff | 01-03-2024 15:22

There was a recent change in weather pattern in Nigeria where we had a cold weather for a few days and then suddenly the weather turned extremely hot. Scientists have said that this was due to the high carbon content in the atmosphere. Can this be an effect of climate change? Come along and let's educate ourselves on climate change.

Climate change is a broad topic that is so important and its importance cannot be overemphasized.  This is an overview of climate change talking about its definition, causes, effects and solutions.

Climate change can be simply defined as the significant variation of average weather conditions becoming , for example, warmer, wetter or drier over several decades or longer. According to Wikipedia, climate change can also be defined as as the long term shifts in temperature and weather patterns. It is the long term shift in global and local weather patterns primarily caused by carbon emissions and greenhouse effect.

From the above definition, it can be inferred that it is important to know the cause, effects and solutions to climate change.

Causes

1. Generating power : Generating electricity by burning fossil fuels causes a large chunk of global emissions.

2. Manufacturing of goods also produce emissions which lead to global warming.

3. Cutting down of trees causes climate change because the carbon the trees have been storing will be released when they are cut off.

4. Using cars, trucks, ships which run on fossil fuels can also contribute to global warming.

Effects

There are so many effects of global warming, here are a few

1. Rising sea levels

2. More droughts and wildfires

3. Unpredictable weather patterns

4. Loss of wildlife and biodiversity

Solutions

1. Phase out the use of fossil fuels.

2. Use of renewable energy

3. Afforestation and reforestation

4. Use of carbon storage technology

With the above information, it won't be farfetched to say that this is due to  excessive carbon emissions which lead to an increased concentration of carbon in the atmosphere which lead to global warming which in turn lead to our unpredictable change in temperature .
