Reuse of Children books - for underprivileged children

by | 18-09-2014 04:39 recommendations 0

I am an advent reader since my childhood and always love to get books as a gift!!! Similarly I know, many of you are also like me?.But I also know that we throw away many books after few years as we grow up and certain category of children books become redundant in our book shelves?.This is very common to my friend?s circle and I thought of re-using those books in place of simply throwing them away?.

Since last one year, I was collecting such redundant but good quality books meant for the children (story books, educational books etc) from my friend circle and this time when I went to India for summer vacation, I packed those books into a big box and carried to india..

At my mother?s place (Howrah, India), ?Anath Bandhu Samity?  is a charitable organization which provides free nursery schooling to the nearby slum children who are not only underprivileged, but also don?t have access to good quality books written in English. The school is run by a group of volunteers who decided to give back something to the society. Each year I visit this school and offer whatever I can during my stay.

This year I carried those books for the children and to my surprise, they were very very delighted to see those glossy coloured booked which immediately attracted them?I will cherish their million dollar smiles on their faces for a longtime? I also shared few very simple tips for saving water like close the water tap when not in use etc so that they can become consious about environment from the very early stage of their lives...I felt very happy that in one way, this effort not only helped in reinforcing the concept of reusing, but also at the same time it benefited to a section of our society?

Kudos to you , Unmesh. Indeed a noble job , a positive step in the direction of "helping the underpriviledged" and " Protecting environment by recycling/reusing paper/book" . I also donate my old /unwanted books to Dubai Public Library , Sharjah Library and through Book Fair exchange programs. You can see from the comments that you already inspired Lesedi and Wen. This is the beauty of this wonderful forum that we learn from each others' best practices.

Killing to birds with one stone, I think this is a great idea Unmash.
Zimbabwe has one of the highest literacy rates in Africa but with the current declining economy the number of homeless kids on the streets are astonishing. I think I will adapt the same concept for my local area.

It is really good to reuse a book and I am Happy to know that you have donated it in Orphanage. It has got dual advantages. It reuse the resources and provides the children with the gateway to the new world,. Although people might call it a simple initiation, but it is indeed effective and great. As Ulfiana we all are proud of you.
