SWACH - Solid Waste Collection and Handling

by | 24-09-2014 15:00 recommendations 0

SWaCH also known as Solid Waste Collection and Handling or, officially, SWaCH Seva Sahakari Sanstha Maryadit, Pune is a completely owned collaborative of self-employed waste pickers, collectors and other urban poor. Many of you might have seen them being featured in many programs worldwide.

It is an autonomous enterprise that provides waste management services to the citizens of Pune.

SWaCH is authorised by the Municipal Corporation Of Pune to provide door-to-door waste collection and other waste management services.

SWaCH being a cooperative owned by the workers, it seeks to provide livelihoods in the waste management industry.

Through its 2300 members, SWaCH services over 4,00,000 households across 15 municipal administrative wards of the PMC (Pune Municipal Corporation)and the number is growing.

SWaCH is promoted by the waste pickers? union Kagad Kach Patra Kashtakari Panchayat that organised 9000+ rag pickers /waste collectors to work with dignity and created a sustainabl waste management model in the country.

SWaCH members collect segregated (dry and wet) waste right from citizens doorsteps and deposit it at the designated PMC collection points.

The wet waste is either processed or is given to the PMC pick-up truck for dumping. The dry waste is further sorted into several categories and recycled.

SWaCH has not only created livelihoods for workers, it has also upgraded their value in society. I strongly recommend this great idea to be followed in the other states of India and even in the other countries of the world.

I do hope Rahul that more states come up with ventures like this to create livelihoods for rag pickers by providing them secured employment.

Yes, I agree with you Arushi. Even I had read that PMC is now reluctant to renew its contract with SWaCH. I hope this does not happen as the consequences would prove disastrous for the state in terms of waste management.

@Humaid : Thanks for introducing SWACH , the cooperative of waste-pickers. This word ,in Hindi ,means Clean as Rohan also mentioned. SWACH is a very good idea as an efficient fool-proof system of door-to-door garbage collection and as a means of income for waste collectors.
Recently I heard that Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is now reluctant to renew its contract with SWaCH. If that happens , it may collapse such a proven and efficient waste collection system which eventually would spoil the neatness , beauty and hygienic safety of the state.

SWaCH (a Hindi word meaning CLEAN) is a great initiative in Pune. It shows the determination of people to turn waste into value.
This reduces pollution, landfills & earns livelihood for these rag pickers.
    A real WIN WIN situation.
    Thanks for reporting Humaid.

Good to know that SWaCH members collect segregated waste, right from citizens?? doorsteps and deposit it at the designated PMC collection points. These type of projects should be promoted by every state gov/peoples. Thanks for sharing, Humaid

Thank you for the cool introduction on SWaCH, Humaid. I think it's a really brilliant idea! It not only lessens the waste problem but also creates jobs for many people. We see many valuable resources such as paper and aluminum discarded as wastes. SWaCH will save many resources by preventing them headed to dumping ground.

Thank you for posting information and link @Humaid. I will go through the link and pick up some ideas which can also be implemented in our communities for proper management of wastes.
And to make our university orient towards sustainable management of waste and promote healthy condition in environment we, the Team of The Eco Minions, are about to launch SEW: Sustainable and Ethical Waste Management Project in our University premises. We will collect he wastes and promote the Reduce, reuse and recycle concept among all of us for positive attitude towards environment.
