Map trees like how you map buildings in Google Map!

Do you know what is tree mapping?

Well, tree mapping basically aims to identify the tree's species and location followed by plotting it on an open-sourced website called pericopsis.orgThis website serves as a platform for everyone to get access to the data, learn about the tree and probably plant it at your home once you know where to get the seed! You might rebut by saying that seeds can be obtained from Gene Bank, often, this place is more accessible for scientists rather than layman.

I am proud that my university, University of Malaya (UM) is selected for this tree mapping activity. We started by mapping Dipterocarp (genus name), aka Pokok Kapur in our local language. It is an endangered tree that needs urgent action to propagate it to our vicinity. We are lucky to have this tree growing strong in few spots around UM.

By creating strong database for plant species, in case of trees felling for development purpose, actions can be taken immediately so as to protect the existence of the endangered species.

That's cool! I've always want Thailand to tag the trees inside the map so it'd be easier to warn the people not to harm them. In Thailand, we tag the tree on their trunks as country's properties. The tagged trees will not be harmed. However, tree mapping can give info of species and where to find their seeds too, right? So, we can actually find it and plant it in our garden. Great idea!

Thanks She for shedding light on "Tree mapping" and congrats for your university's selection for this project.
Even in UAE , EAD(Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi)has started similar project "The Habitat Mapping Project" which aims to identify the health status and type of species of trees and document all fauna and flora across the emirate with the help of state-of-the art satellite mapping technologies. I had posted a report on it at below link :

Nice article She Mei Tan and thank you for the link :)
i just clicked the link and visited the page. it seems interesting. Previously i've never heard about mapping trees. I will certainly urge my university to map trees as my university is mainly related to study of agriculture and forestry.
Like Alina has said, here in our country we've the tradition of naming family name, botanical name and common name(both in Nepali and English).

I have seen tree tagging,we apply tree tagging here which only includes family name, genus name and common name.Tree mapping sounds too amazing, and it's really great for endangered species conservation as we will have all the information required beginning from the seed and tending operations to be applied until it's harvest.Thank you for sharing She. :)

Very interesting Effort SHE. Our highest regards for University of Malaya t introduce Tree Mapping in Malaysia.
Here in UAE also they have identified & counted each tree. They intend to tag each tree & track its growth from the control room.
    Thanks for the report

Nice report She! Tree mapping is a very good way of assessing and monitoring the wealth of region in terms of plants (trees). One of the environmental groups here in our city also conducted this kind of initiative and had a tree mapping in our city's protected watershed. It did not only helped them monitor the health of the watershed, it also educates visitors who go to the area. :)
