From Buses to Streets || Dust to Air

by | 01-10-2014 02:46 recommendations 0

Not everyone can afford a car here. Poverty is on its top. Every one of 5 poor can be found in India. Above all, with the level of corruption, the government them self seems to have become poor and the consequences has directly effected the environment.

As the picture depicts, the streets has got much pits caused mostly by overloaded vehicle. Despite, the government workers are just resting in their air conditioned house and guys like me are visiting these places in extreme sunlight. The pits are causing the drivers to step frequently on brakes. The car's engine efficiency is decreasing by 1.6%, in those area, every 3 months. overloaded trucks, that are older than 10 years, can be seen in majority. Their exhaust system is nothing but a factory of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide. Government have initiated an act to fine overloaded vehicle, but as I mentioned, corruption has reached it's maximum limit, the drivers pays some bribe and continue to contribute toward degradation of environment.

Same is the condition with buses. The Municipal owned buses is a great example of rusting of vehicle. These vehicles should be rather be present at school to teach the students about rusting. Their mileage is of a average of 3 KMPL and some at a drastic number of 1 KM in 1.2 Litre. The pits on the streets are causing load on their suspension which actually don't work. This lead to maximum load on their tyres thus on engine. Just putting their foot on acceleration with some pressure, a huge black smoke get emitted from the bus and as its India, there isn't any rule, there ins't any bus stop in the city till date , the drivers stop anywhere, wherever they see a passenger. While travelling myself in one of the city ride buses, to check this fact,  I notices the bus stops 6 times with in 100 meter. And each time when it accelerates, I saw about, just as the amount of smoke ( emitted black gas ) enough to fill a big size balloon, was released. And one can imagine the consequences from it's color, almost black.

It's not only the pits, but it's the traffic system also that are being a part in air pollution. There isn't a single working traffic light in the whole city, PATNA. Traffic policemen them self have to do it manually. Obviously a human can't be systematic especially when his interest is not in that. People them self are involved in this. Whenever they find a place, they always try to get out from that without thinking that it will cause a traffic jam. Not only this, they also continues to press horns in the traffic jam, knowing that the later one can't move unless he is clear. Thus creating a huge shot of sound pollution.

Agreed Basu, all sorts of dirty pollution exists in India in general & Patna in particular as you have reported.
You must highlight this issue at local level & impart education to the public as well.
Thanks for the report. Together we all strive to make this planet a better place to live.

Thanks for a detailed report , Basu. Your report presents couple of problems faced by residents in India . Poor road conditions , lack of environmental ethics(many people using cars and increasing carbon footprint) , no traffic sense etc. Local government needs to put in strict laws in place to ban honking (like in UAE, honking is not allowed as it produces noise pollution) , to follow lane driving , to allow only 1 car per family encouraging public transport , subsidising public transport fare , educating people about environmental values.
Thanks for sharing your concerns on this forum thru your report. Current govt in India believes in inclusion and is always inviting ideas , proposals from common man . I hope you and other similar concerned people raise these issues at that level or through newspapers "letter to editor /community report" sections to draw the attention of authorities. This for sure needs top priority attention .

Thanks Basu for your comprehensive report.
I understand exactly what you feel about the situation in your country because it's is almost exactly the same case in Nigeria. These heavy-duty cars are almost always releasing heavy doses of thick dark smoke from their exhaust pipes and because people are trapped in traffic jams, the smoke circulates round the unsuspecting commuters.
It is painful to know that people bribe their way through but awareness, like you have done, will go a long way in solving the problem.

What you've said is cent percent true. It is indeed the democratic form of govt that has led to the disintegration of our country.
Where there is politics there is corruption. For a country like India to develop we should switch to a socialist or a monarchical form of govt. The govt receives enough revenue to develop India socially as well as sustainably.
But they are not used to their complete extent due to the greed of few individual. I guess Gandhiji's words' are quite apt for the present situation our country is facing :
¡°Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's greed.¡±
