As The 13th Eco-Generation Regional Ambassador to Bangladesh I got the opportunity to hold a workshop which I named Mind Mechanism on Scientific Literacy regarding Environmental issues. The details of the workshop is given below:

Report

1.       At first the participants were given registration form (ANEX-A), Program agenda(ANEX-B), Participants? opinion and suggestion sheet(ANEX-C) and pencil(1:1), ruler(1:1), post it(1:1), leaflet(1:1) provided by TUNZA Eco-generation(attachment includes photo). The participants returned me the filled up forms after they completed giving the necessary information.  Though the expected participants number was 70, there were 50(average age- 12+, occupation- student,male-18, female-32) of them present in the workshop (List of participants-ANEX-D)

2.       Then the organizer, Tapashi Binte Mahmud Chowdhury delivered her introductory speech in the beginning. In the speech, the organizer introduced TUNZA Eco Generation and the tremendous works done by the organization. And then the current environment both local and global was briefed by the organizer. The VIP guest, Umme Salema Begum, the principal of Udayan Uchcha Madhyamik Bidyalaya gave her inspirational speech, and left in a hurry since she had a meeting.

3.       One of the participants, Bivas Das, gave his opinion about the workshop and also told his expectations from this workshop.

4.       Discussion session: A sum of discussions were held with the participants, about scientific literacy. Topics included- What is science, Why we study science, What is scientific literacy, How scientific literacy helps us to make a scientific mind-set and rational decisions, How Science is connected with environment, what is environment, what are the current issues of environment, What is Flood, How Flood occurs, What are the repercussions of Flood, How can we take part to limit the affection of Flood.

5.       There was a photo exhibition on Flood in Bangladesh?14. The participants were made concerned about the destructions of flood, and realized the consequences of it. Thus they were motivated to take steps to mitigate the facts that cause Flood.

6.       The participants gave their opinion on written form in the prescribed sheet, they were given. There, they sorted out the cause of environment disaster and they came up with 2 unique ideas that can save our environment.  As the cause of environment disaster, both locally and globally, they sorted out the things below-

a)      Local: Use of Polithene, plastics, deforestation, mass population, natural disasters,  air pollution by smoke, soil erosion and water polution through waste disposal, sound pollution, mismanagement, lack of education and awareness etc.

b)      Global: Climate change, Nuclear explosion,  Ocean Pollution,

   Proposals given by the participants:

a)      Awareness building up through campaign, workshops, leaflet distribution, photo exhibition on the consequences of environment disaster.

b)      Among the students, they wanted to select at least 5 representatives who will motivate and engage other students for leading the further awareness build up campaigns for saving environment

7) The organizer delivered the conclusion speech and after then a photo session was held. The participants with the most unique ideas were encouraged with little gifts at this time.

Evaluation of the organizer

1)      The participants were very supportive, encouraged, motivated and they wanted more workshops like this in future, they also wanted the workshop to run a little longer. But since there was some limitation about time, we couldn?t hold it much longer.

2)      All the participants agreed and appreciated to participate in this kind of various programs on environment.

3)      Since they gave the proposal to select 5 representatives, who will continue this awareness campaign go farther, the organizer thinks it will help them not only to create a healthy environment but also to build up leadership skills in them.

4)      The campaign was successful to build awareness in a small scale, among only 50students. But hopefully, if the program could include the family or some social representatives, that would create a larger effect.

Well begun is half done. Tapashi, you did a nice job. Imparting awareness to the young is the most effective method.
Hope to see more your efforts like this.
I liked the idea of selecting 5 representatives to spread environmental awareness. This will definitely boost their leadership skills as well.

Excellent initiative , Tapashi. You raised the awareness about environment -in one go -to so many students . Best part is that you ensured that 5 reps will further share with many others. This is how we reach masses. I fully endorse your point on leadership skill development. Such campaigns not only do good to environment but also develop our's & participants' communication , leadership and inter-personal relation building skills .
