Activity Report: Good and Green Alluvial Mining, A Revealer Behind the Scene of Mining Industry

There is much information related to environment issues around us. The things are in television, newspapers, and magazines and even in social media and most of them try to convey provocative messages which float hatred in the air. Sometimes, what the press report is true but for some reasons the news are not balance and have tendencies to point certain industries as the main culprits for the reported incidents. So here, this report is going to show a seminar titled ?Good and Green Alluvial Mining? which put an industry party as the speaker and gave a different point of view about natural resource exploration.

The seminar was held in 11st October 2014 in Palembang by Mining Student Association, Sriwijaya University. The invited speakers were the mining experts from PT. Timah, tbk which is one of Indonesia government mining company.

This seminar was focus on mining sector. Why? Because it is often claimed as one of industry types that causes some great damage to environment. This claim is somehow reasonable where natural resources exploration as the main characteristic of mining makes it happened. Moreover, this sector is full with big companies but only certain people know another parties take part in the business too. Some of them do not have adequate knowledge about how to do a good exploration. In contrast, they keep going to do in the name of economy.  So the seminar has aim to reveal some hidden truth to its audience.

The audiences of this seminar were mining students from the first year to the last year, lecturer and alumni. There is a question about the audiences. Why were them? Why were not the public as the participants? Because the seminar contained many specific terms that ordinary people find it difficult to understand. Therefore it was hoped that the mining students as the future expert of this field could spread the information to the society and people around them with more simple effective explanation.

Here is a glimpse about PT. Timah, tbk. This company is government mining company. They are located in Bangka island and Belitung island where the biggest tin deposits in Indonesia are located. Their product is solely tin. They produce many forms of tin based on orders. Their costumers mainly come from Europe, America and Pacific Asia. They are often blamed by media for environmental damages in both islands but what media report is disputed by certain people.

In the beginning of seminar, the speaker showed the company profile. Beside the history of company and the business type, it contained information of two different types of the company?s working areas. The first was land area and the last was sea area. The Land area is no longer to be the main focus, due to the decrease of tin reserve amount, meanwhile the sea provides more tin in alluvial form. So, there are many ex- working area in the land.
What is happened with the ex-working area? The speaker explained that the company has reclaimed the area. They had planted some vegetation to help the area recovery and rejuvenation. This action has done based on mining act issued by the government (In Indonesia: UU Minerba). Furthermore, they may not leave the area after plantation, they must maintain the area. The government audit team is going to control the work in certain period. The company will get penalty/punishment on condition that they neglect the area. It is also real form of K3L policy.

K3L is a standard set by the government along with mining expert in order to create good and safe working environment toward workers and environment. K3L is abbreviation of ?keselamatan, kesehatan kerja dan lingkungan? (safety, work healthiness and environment). So, this standard emphasizes to systematical work to minimize the accident and the environmental damage.

In the next session, the speaker explained more about mining in sea. Beside detail of the exploration technique, he added the way of ex-area reclamation in the water. Plantation of coral reef is chosen as the best way for recovering the area. He did not forget to emphasize the same procedure as in the land.

In the answer and question session, there were many questions. One of them was about the environment damages in the land pointed by media. He clarified that they were not responsibility of the company. Another party outside the company may have the responsibility. Who were them? He explained the miners of time were not only the major company, but also citizens who run the activity illegally. Due to being illegal, this party did not follow the reclamation procedure and left the areas remain as holes.

After that session, the speaker closed the seminar by emphasizing the K3L principle and giving some motivation toward the audiences. Furthermore, they give a stress to the audiences for always working with the environment harmoniously.

At the end, the committee gave some souvenirs as rewards for the audiences who gave the questions.

As a form of sponsorship for this event, the committee allowed me to give socialization. In five minutes, I introduced Tunza- Eco Generation. Do know that standing in front of foreigners makes my hands and knees trembling? It was so scary. I explained Tunza-Eco Generation orally and I played video of GYELS 2013 that I downloaded from Youtube. It is not related to the topic. Yes! Then I realize that Eco-Generation Team should make introduction video, so it will be easier to me for promoting in other event.

Due to long process in the customs, the promotional kit arrived late. It was okay! The goods were given after the seminar. I hope it can be useful for the participants.

To close this report, I would like to give my opinion about the event. For me, the event is quite good, because it gave me unpredictable information about natural resources exploitation. Before attending this, I always thought that Industries played the main role to environmental damages but after the hilarious explanation from the speakers, I changed my mind. I think that I cannot blame to a party for something that we don't have enough information about it. Then I hope, there will be more activities like this in the future, because the more people know, the more good ideas will appear. This event are really informative, inspirational and refreshing.

Note: I'm sorry, I cover my face, I feel unconfident with my face in those photos :D

Thanks Rin , for explaining the event with such details that I could visualise what must have happened . Great.! Glad to know that you took the opportunity to promote Tunza Eco Gen.
You've written this report and your feelings so honestly & nicely in this report that I loved reading every word of it . Such events are indeed very useful for brainstorming , for socialising and meeting many like minded people.
The environmental impact /damage of mining is widespread. Besides creating environmental damage, the contamination resulting from leakage of chemicals (during mining)also affects the health of the local population . I read somewhere that mining can be done by various methods. Some mining methods may have significant environmental and public health effects. So Govt should not allow such methods. Mining companies should be asked to follow environmental and rehabilitation codes, ensuring the area mined is returned to close to its original state

A nice & detailed Report Rin, congrats.
Well, as regards mining is concerned, I feel the govt. must stop all illegal miners as they are most damaging.
The big companies as bound by K3L will follow CSR principle and at least not leave the mined area.
I believe, as you mentioned, nature will recoup the damages to an extent but sustainable practices must be carried on undeterred even if hurdles are in place.

@ Chelsea, Samuel, Salma, Azieh : Thanks for you comments which give me courage to provide more informative report. Thanks for reading also, May Allah bless you.

@ Christy and Alina : Yes, The speakers told us that even though the company has reclaimed the are, the are will never recover to the condition before the exploration. But I believe, by the time, the area will heal since the nature will arrange its condition systematically. Thanks for encouraging comments and Thanks a lot for reading.

Hi Rin, thank you for the lovely report! I laughed a lot seeing your pics covered with a fun icon. It's okay :)
And I think it's also a good idea making introduction video clip of Tunza Eco-generation.

Regarding mining, I saw several films at the Green Film Festival held in Seoul, Korea.
And the damage on the environment was much severer than I guessed.
It seems almost irreversible to take it back to its original beauty.
But we can't force the businesses to stop their business.
One way to mitigate the damage from mining is as you mentioned, strengthening the applied level of K3L in order to prevent over exploitation.

Mining on both land and water has various adverse effects like pollution, loss of biodiversity, deforestation etc.Often only it's economic importances are realized ignoring it's adversities which is really hazardous to environment. In that regard i think this concept of"good and green alluvial mining" is a great solution. Thanks for sharing Rin. :)
