Do you know about the proposed Sustainable Development Goals

by | 30-03-2015 21:41 recommendations 0

Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) that were established to respond to address the world's main development challenges are due to expire at the end of this year. These goals were adopted and signed by about 147 heads of state and governments following the Millennium Summit of the United Nations that took place during the Rio+20, in September 2000.

Despite numerous global, regional and national commitments to achieve all this goals, not all of them have been delivered as expected .For example the  goal on cutting extreme poverty by half , is something that has already been achieved as a group but not accomplished at county by country , region by region level . Some parts of the developing countries in Africa and other parts of the world still suffers from extreme poverty , hunger , diseases ,violence and conflicts , gender inequality , poor governance among others .  There has been critics of the MDG's that they were considered targets for poor countries to achieve, with finance from wealthy states.

We need a new and dramatic approach on how to respond to world challenges every country will be expected to work towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. From the Rio +20 ,Future we Want report ,World leaders in different working groups have  agreed to make a transition from MDGs to SDGs , the SDGs are expected to be Action –Oriented , Concise and Easy to Communicate ,Limited in number , Inspirational ,Global in nature and Universally applicable to all countries while taking into account different national realities ,capacities and levels of development and respecting national policies and priorities. SDG is building on ending extreme poverty, addressing and focusing on priority areas for the achieving economic development that is inclusive of environment, social and good governance.

Thanks for listing down the proposed SDGs .
I appreciate the introduction of SDGs as compared to MDG which were too vast , big ideas with broken promises and also lacked enough emphasis on sustainable development. MDGs also lacked specific dates and measureable aims.
Having said all that , I also feel that MDGs were good starting point to mobilise world leaders to sit together , chalk out global issues and plans.
SDGs seems to be better , improved versions of MDGs.

Dear Samuel, thank you for sharing about detailed goals incorporated in SDGs. Though the millenium development goals couldn't succeed as expected but hopefully these SDG will have larger, visible impact towards sustainable future :)
