International Literacy Day: A talk with rural people of Rockfort

Dear All,

"If you want to know about different cultures and people then visit any tourist place where you can find people with different cultures and ethics who will let you know the current situations and sufferings. Today, I went to Ucchi Pillayar Temple, Rockfort where I did get to know about their opinion about Literacy. Managing family business, time, money, daily meals, health, school, facility, gender discrimination, etc.. mean a lot for them and their children. Children of poor people are forced to involve in family business because they don't have any other option. In rural area, we can find a sick person by any disease in each home due to which children either leave their studies or concentrate more on their family business than study."

Understanding Literacy - Literacy is a fundamental human right and the foundation for lifelong learning. It is fully essential to social and human development in its ability to transform lives. - UNESCO

Literacy in India is key for socio-economic progress, and the Indian literacy rate grew to 74.04% in 2011 from 12% at the end of British rule in 1947. Although this was a greater than sixfold improvement, the level is well below the world average literacy rate of 84%, and India currently has the largest illiterate population of any nation on earth. The absence of adequate school infrastructure like improper facilities and inefficient teaching staff is one of the main factors affecting literacy in India.

Few quotes by great people - "Every Literate woman is a victory over poverty." - Ban Ki Moon

"Literacy is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the World." - Nelson Mandela

"Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope." - Kofi Annan

Thanks!!
