WHERE IS THE ELUSIVE PEACE?

by Neha Swaminathan | 03-10-2012 12:43 recommendations 0

On the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's Birthday celebrations, I took a pledge with a few of my friends to follow our conscience.

"There is a higher court than courts of justice and that is the court of conscience. It supercedes all other courts" is a famous quote by Mahatma Gandhi.

Conscience is an aptitude, faculty, intuition or judgment of the intellect that distinguishes right from wrong. In psychological terms conscience is often described as leading to feelings of remorse when a human commits actions that go against his/her moral values and to feelings of righteousness or integrity when actions conform to such norms. Religious views of conscience usually see it as linked to a morality inherent in all humans. Conscience is also referreed to as the "voice within" and the "inner light".

Relationship between peace of conscience and peace of mind.

In modern times, there is so much of pain and suffering throughout the world that could be avoided by understanding and applying truth. For many, relief and happiness can come by understanding the relationship between peace of conscience and peace of mind and by living the principles upon which both of these blessings are founded.

Without peace of conscience, you can have no real peace of mind. Peace of conscience relates to your inner self and is controlled by what you personally do. Peace of mind is often affected by external forces such as time-bound or economic pressures, offenses, deteriorating world conditions, or more to do than sufficient time to do it. An unsettled mind is temporary, transitory. Peace of mind is restored by resolving the external forces that disturb it. Peace of conscience cannot be easily restored even if you repent for the past mistakes. A troubled conscience is unrelenting, ever present, a constant reminder from one's mistakes. Peace of conscience can never be achieved by accumulating wrong actions done against our conscience.

So take an oath right away to follow our conscience for true inner peace. If everyone's action follows his or her conscience, the road to a peaceful life will be much easier since a true conscience can guide our actions to focus on the external forces affecting our peace and find a resolution to the benefit of a bigger section of people.

While conscience is our friend, all is at peace however once it is offended, farewell to a tranquil mind - LADY MARY WORTLEY MONTAGU
