17th OCTOBER - International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

by | 16-10-2012 02:39 recommendations 0

Eradication of Poverty is one of  UN?s MDGs i.e. Millennium Development Goals . With the world population at 7 billion , every day hundreds slip below the poverty line. A dream of sustainable growth will remain just that – a dream unless we are able to reverse this trend and eradicate poverty.

17th October is celebrated every year as The United Nations? (UN) International Day for the Eradication of Poverty since 1993. Its !--object--ive is to increase people?s awareness of the need to eradicate poverty globally, particularly in developing countries.

The logo given below for this day is quite eloquent as it shows humans helping and caring for one another.

Poverty eradication requires a change in country policies hence political will is a must . Several organizations across the globe use this day as a rallying point to influence policy makers.

The observance of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty can be traced back to October 17, 1987. On that date, more than 100,000 people gathered in Paris, France, to honor the victims of extreme poverty, violence and hunger.

At the Millennium Summit in 2000, world leaders committed themselves to cutting by half the number of people living in extreme poverty by the year 2015.

Australia has a unique way of spreading awareness about this issue. They have proclaimed 14th to 20th October 2012 as the Anti-Poverty Week wherein all Australians are encouraged to organise or take part in an activity aiming to highlight or overcome issues of poverty and hardship locally or overseas .

Many more such initiatives are required to achieve poverty eradication which in turn can lead to sustainability.

This has something to do with Agflation. High food prices hits poor people most harshly...
So we can connect our think to Unmesh's article on World Food Day (http://tunza.eco-generation.org/ambassadorReportView.jsp?viewID=1557)
