The hills, source of life!

 Going up a long way and leaving aside the tracks and cement, to be changed for landscaping, clean air and beautiful sceneries, we found the hills!

The hills are ecosystems of special ecological conditions, with varied vegetation and greens during the winter, which in Peru is from May to September.

The vegetation of hills is developed on the slopes out to the sea, which promote the condensation of mists brought by the winds blowing from the south and southwest. These hills can reach up to 1000 meters above sea level, with local variations. The humidity is very high and is between 85% and 100%.

The vegetation is varied and consists of algae, lichens, mosses, ferns and herbaceous flowering plants, shrub and tree.

Las lomas, Fuente de vida!

Subiendo por un largo camino y dejando de lado las pistas y el cemento, para cambiarlo por areas verdes, aire limpio y hermosos paisajes, encontramos las lomas!

Las lomas son ecosistemas de condiciones ecologicas especiales, con vegetacion de diversos tipos y que reverdece durante el invierno, que en Peru es desde  Mayo hasta  Setiembre.

La vegetacion de lomas se desarrolla en las laderas orientadas hacia el mar, que favorecen la condensacion de las neblinas traidas por los vientos que soplan del sur y el sudoeste. Estas lomas pueden  llegar hasta los 1 000 msnm, con variaciones a nivel local.  La humedad es muy alta, y se encuentra entre 85% y 100%.

La vegetacion es variada y conformada por algas, liquenes, musgos, helechos y plantas de flores de porte herbaceo, arbustivo y arboreo.

The variety of fauna that can be found is really amazing, including: reptiles, insects, small mammals. This is very interesting because these hills are not valued and appreciated for their beauty and importance, Lima being considered a city in the desert, it is vital to conserve these ecosystems, especially for the large amount of moisture there and also could sustainably use. And especially because they are in the city, so close to everything, but also away.

Here are some photos taken by my friend Hector Barrera, a biologist at the National Agrarian La Molina University and lives in Villa Maria, so also directly know the current status of the hills and works with a group for the protection of these hills.

La variedad de fauna que podemos encontrar es realmente asombrosa, entre ellas: reptiles, insectos, mamiferos pequenos. Lo que es muy interesante, ya que estas lomas no son valoradas y apreciadas en su belleza e importancia, siendo Lima considerada la segunda ciudad en medio del desierto, es vital conservar estos ecosistemas, sobretodo por la gran cantidad de humedad que hay y que tambien se puede utilizar de manera sostenible. Y sobretodo porque se encuentran en la ciudad, tan cerca a todo, pero a la vez pareciendo alejado.

Unfortunately, the species that live in these hills are in danger because of our actions. We are directly affecting the habitat of many species and is a topic that is always heard but in many cases is not taken as being important for authorities and sometimes by ourselves. I realized this last week when I attended a reforestation in the hills of Villa Maria, where they explained the initiative and we observed how people are invading several areas, installing their homes and in many cases promoting trafficking of land not belonging to them, thus altering the ecosystem.

Lamentablemente, las especies que viven en estas lomas estan en peligro, debido a nuestras acciones. Estamos afectando de manera directa el habitat de muchas especies y es un tema del que siempre se escucha pero que en muchos casos no es tomado como de importancia por autoridades y en algunos casos por nosotros mismos. De esto me di cuenta la  semana pasada cuando asisti  a una reforestacion en las lomas de Villa Maria, en donde nos explicaron y pudimos observar como es que las personas estan invadiendo varias zonas, instalando ahi sus casas y en muchos casos promoviendose el trafico de terrenos  que no les pertenecen, alterando de esta forma el ecosistema.

Among the most endangered species is amancaes flower (Ismene amancaes), an endemic species of hills that requires protection and revaluation for its ornamental importance, history and botany. Its beauty has inspired artists and intellectuals. Since pre-Hispanic times, the Inca culture keros and other ceramics decorated with this flower. Martinez de Compagnon, Bishop of Trujillo, recorded Amancae flower in watercolors.

Even they say that since the sixteenth century there was a party, where people from all over came together to eat and celebrate with Amancaes flowers, a tradition that has been lost, because they are no longer found these flowers.

This flower is considered the symbol of Lima, is known for its beautiful yellow color, and has a short shelf life between 4-5 days.

Entre las especies mas amenazadas y que se encuentran en peligro esta la flor de amancaes (Ismene Amancaes), especie endemica de lomas que requiere de proteccion  y que tiene importancia ornamental, historica y botanica. Su belleza ha inspirado a artistas e intelectuales. Desde epocas prehispanicas, la cultura Inca decoro keros y otros ceramios con esta flor. Martinez de Compagnon, Obispo de Trujillo, registro la flor de Amancae en acuarelas.

Incluso cuentan que desde el siglo XVI se celebraba una fiesta, en donde personas de todos lados se juntaban para comer y celebrar junto a muchas flores de Amancaes, tradicion que se ha perdido, debido a que ya no se encuentran estas flores.

Esta flor es considerada la flor simbolo de lima, se caracteriza por su hermoso color amarillo intenso, ademas tiene un corto periodo de vida entre 4 a 5 dias.

In these hills there are other attractions, including archaeological remains, cave paintings with great historical value, making it all together has a great scenic beauty.

En estas lomas tambien existen otros atractivos, entre ellos restos arqueologicos, pinturas rupestres con un gran valor historico,  logrando que todo junto tenga una gran belleza escenica.

There are standards that protect the hills as an important ecosystem, but the district municipality is not applying efficiently municipal ordinances, as these should regulate the disorderly growth of the urban area, preventing alter the flora and fauna of the hills .

we can see how they have burned several areas, including crops have been installed on the pretext of forming agricultural associations for the sole purpose of appropriation of land.

Aunque existen normas que protegen las lomas como un ecosistema importante, la municipalidad del distrito no ejecuta de manera eficiente las ordenanzas municipales que deberian regular el crecimiento desordenado de la zona urbana, evitando que alteren la flora y fauna de las lomas.

Se puede observar como es que han quemado varias areas, incluso han instalado cultivos, con el pretexto de formacion de asociaciones agricolas con el unico fin de apropiarse de los terrenos.  

However, just as there are people not aware, there are many people who have realized the importance of the hills, not only for the biodiversity that exists there, but by the great potential there. An example are the residents of the Lomas de Villa Maria, The hills The hills of Lucumo and Mangomarca.

As different as ALEV organization are looking for ways to make a difference and work with citizens, for example in different reforestation carried out, supported by the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima, and various youth organizations, Orientadores Ecoturisticos de Lomas de VMT, Circuito Turistico Lomas de VMT, Comando Ecologico.

This time was reforested with trees tara (caesalpinia Spinosa), which are well adapted to the area previously planted casuarinas & huarangos and also we cleaned the whole circuit Lomas, and we were informed that the August 11 will be opened as a eco-tourism circuit, where hundreds of people could enjoy and relate more to the nature in the city, as it is located in Lima and within half an hour of the nearest railway station. During this activity not only prevent more people try to invade important spaces, also that the authorities and the general public will become aware and the importance of this wonderful space.

As a personal experience, I would like to share how awesome it is to see the Hills, the beauty that harbor, every little plant that symbolizes life and in contrast, the urbanization of this ecosystem, but the positive side for me was to see the great joy with which all participants of the reforestation were worked, regardless of the cold or fatigue, each one took by a long way trees and tools and thus achieved the goal.

Although this is neither the first nor the last reforestation, for each participant is a great experience, also motivates us to observe how people are also interested in caring for nature and sustainability, we just need more people to join in work for conservation and I am sure that with the inauguration of this circuit more people can visit and appreciate how wonderful are the hills.

And just as the hills we must take care each ecosystem because they harbor different species of flora and fauna, where each of them is as important as us and if we are unable to protect could become extinct, now depends on all of us change the situation, every little effort will achieve many positive changes!

Sin embargo, asi como hay personas no conscientes, hay muchas personas que se han dado cuenta de la importancia de las lomas, no solo por la biodiversidad que ahi existe, sino por el gran potencial que hay. Un ejemplo son los pobladores de las Lomas de Villa Maria, Las lomas de Lucumo y Las lomas de Mangomarca.

Por lo que junto a diferentes organizaciones como ALEV buscan formas de lograr un cambio y trabajan junto a ellos, por ejemplo en las diferentes reforestaciones que se llevan a cabo, apoyados por la Municipalidad Metropolitana de Lima , y diferentes organizaciones juveniles , Orientadores Ecoturisticos de Lomas de VMT, Circuito Turistico Lomas de VMT, Comando Ecologico . 

En esta oportunidad se hizo reforestacion con arboles de tara (Caesalpinia spinosa), que se adaptan muy bien a la zona, anteriormente se plantaron  huarangos  y casuarinas, ademas se limpio todo el circuito  de Lomas, que el 11 de Agosto  sera inaugurado como un circuito eco- turistico, en donde cientos de personas podran aprovechar y relacionarse mas con la naturaleza en la ciudad, ya que se encuentra en Lima y a menos de media hora de la estacion de tren mas cercana. Durante esta actividad, no solo evitara que mas personas traten de invadir espacios  importantes, sino que las autoridades y personas en general tomaran conciencia y veran la importancia de este maravilloso espacio.

Como experiencia personal podria compartirles lo impresionante que es ver las Lomas, la belleza que alberga, cada pequena planta que se encuentra y que es simbolo de vida  y en contraste con ello, la urbanizacion de este ecosistema, pero el lado positivo para mi fue ver la gran alegria con la que todos los participantes de la reforestacion trabajaban, sin importar el frio o el cansancio, cada uno llevo por un largo camino arboles y herramientas y asi se logro el objetivo. 

Aunque esta no es ni la primera, ni la ultima reforestacion, para cada participante es una gran experiencia, el ver como los pobladores tambien se interesan por cuidar de la naturaleza y de lograr la sostenibilidad, solo falta que mas personas se unan para trabajar por su conservacion y estoy segura que con la inauguracion de este circuito mas personas podran visitar y apreciar directamente lo maravilloso  de las Lomas.

Y asi como las lomas debemos cuidar cada uno de los ecosistemas, pues ellos albergan diferentes especies de flora y fauna, donde cada una de ellas es tan importante como nosotros  y  si no somos capaces de protegerlas  podrian llegar a extinguirse, depende ahora de todos nosotros cambiar la situacion, cada pequeno esfuerzo lograra muchos cambios positivos!
