Nuclear Waste

Nuclear Waste:

Around 8910 tons of heavy metal nuclear waste are generated each year. This waste mainly comes from nuclear power stations. Three territories produce over 1000 tons a year: the United States, Canada, and France. Canada also produces the most waste per person living there, although Sweden is not far behind. Some islands in the Southern hemisphere with notable areas are: New Caledonia, the Islas Malvinas / Falkland Islands, South Georgia, and Reunion. On these maps, they are assigned to France and the United Kingdom, and resized according to their combined data. Little or no nuclear waste is from these islands.

Tons of nuclear waste generated:

 Rank  Territory  Value
 1  United State  1630
 2  Canada   1300
 3  France  1146
 4  Japan  996
 5  United Kingdom  650
 6  Repuplic of Korea  634
 7  Germany  420
 8  Sweden  310
 9  Bilgium  144
 10  Spain  136

According to the former director of the Sudan Atomic Energy Commission in Sudan, unfortunately, China has buried dozens of containers with toxic waste in the desert of Northern Sudan, according to a high-ranking official. The waste was most probably coming from nuclear plants in China.
40 containers were buried in the desert not far from the Merowe Dam construction site. Another 20 containers were also disposed in the desert, though not buried.

Hi Razzan! Thanks for sharing your report on nuclear waste.
I've been always curious about which country generates the largest amount of nuclear wastes, and your report just gave me the answer:) Thanks for informative report and looking forward to your next report!

Thank you Razaan for your report. I assume that China disposing the nuclear waste in Sudan would have been through permission from the Sudan government.

@Cheonghan, According to the former director of the Sudan Atomic Energy Commission in Sudan, Mohamed Siddig, 60 containers have been brought to Sudan together with construction materials and machinery for the building of the Merowe Dam (Hamdab Dam) in the Northern part of Sudan. He did not mention the exact year of the import and the date the nuclear waste was disposed. China worked on the dam between 2004 and 2009.

Razaan, thank you for your report. Interesting to see nuclear waste from various nations. So tons of nuclear waste sinks radically and I think that is a good news here, although 136 tons from Spain is not that little. How did China get to bury nuclear waste in Sudan? I wish to know more.
