Advantages and Drawbacks of Nuclear Energy

NUCLEAR ENERGY

We gain it from the core, which is scientifically called the nucleus, of atoms. It is becoming today a source of energy which is getting numerous users. It is said that there are at least thirty (30) countries which use nuclear energy and even 20 per cent of the energy of one the biggest countries in the world which is the United States of America comes from a nuclear source. This great use of energy can push to wonder what the nuclear can generate as advantages. However are there not some drawbacks? Also, due to the imperative of preserving our environment, it is important to know if the nuclear energy is renewable or not.

Nowadays, around the world, many countries are increasing their use of nuclear energy. They use it for many things. Beyond seeing it as a means to produce bombs and related materials, amazingly it is used to produce electricity. It can be used to heat houses in cold zones. For example, nuclear energy produces low carbon compared to the other sources of energy like coal. It is an energy which operates at a high level of efficiency. For example, just one pellet of fuel from nuclear facilities can provide the same fuel as 149 gallons of oil.  Also, states where nuclear energy is used generate $16 billion dollars from the taxes imposed on nuclear use and this helps for roads, schools and many other social needs. Nonetheless, there are several drawbacks related to the use of nuclear energy. Nuclear energy even generates for example 1.800 jobs in the United States.

In fact, nuclear energy is the source of many dangers our planet and its people are submitted to.  Nuclear energy exposes the humanity to radioactive waste. This radioactive waste for instance can affect our health. This waste is still hazardous today and it is making it more difficult to shift the waste. In addition, the uranium fuel which is removed from the power plant becomes radio which is wasted somewhere in the environment. Further, nuclear power plant use water for cooling and for production, this water is removed from rivers. This can impact the life of the fishes and other creatures which have the water as their home. Therefore, is this energy renewable or not?

This subject creates two point of view. On one side, we find this energy renewable. In fact, nuclear energy is extracted from the core of atoms while atoms are what make up the world, so nuclear energy is what keeps atoms together and atoms hold together everything in this universe and what is amazing is that this energy can be used for electricity purpose. On the other hand, we find not renewable. As a matter of fact, a renewable energy is an energy that can be replenished and must come from a depleted source. While, nuclear energy is extracted from uranium which is not a renewable source. Also the fission process used by the nuclear to produce energy is also seen as one of the reason why nuclear energy is not renewable. Therefore, it is simply considered as a clean energy but not a renewable energy. Thus, due to the fragility of our environment, should we continue to use nuclear energy as we are not sure of its renewability or not?

Hi Frederic! Thanks for sharing your report on pros and cons of nuclear energy.
As you mentioned, nuclear power is considered to be envionmentally clean. When it comes to its renewability, there are many researches and experiments going on to make it renewable. I think it would be helpful for you to read other ambassadors' report especially those dealing with renewability issue of uranium!

Frederic, thank you for your report. We could see here pros and cons of nuclear energy. As you said, yes there is a dilemma here, but we cannot just abandon nuclear energy right? If you wish to write more about nuclear energy, I think it??s worth writing about nuclear energy in your country.
