Week of environmental Awareness and climate action (EcoCiencias UNAM)

On February a group of students of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) called ¡°Eco-Ciencias¡± Organized an Environmental Awareness Campaign at the Faculty of Science. These environmentally conscious students arranged free Conferences and Workshops for Everybody. The main objective of the week was promoting environmental conservation and above all to encourage more people to take action in favor of nature.

The Week of environmental Awareness and climate action was completely successful. The Auditorium was full, and the responses to the workshops were good. The Club Managed to invite the most outstanding figures on Environmental Fields in Mexico. Among the speakers was the Director of the National Institute of Ecology and Climate Change, Dr. María Amparo Martínez Arroyo, one of the most important researchers worldwide in the conservation of Hummingbirds. The CEOs of eco-friendly business as well as Research Groups leaders and Climate action groups leaders.

There were a wide variety of Workshops. One of them was about how to implement aquaponic crops in houses, and its economic benefits and adaptation to climate change. Another one was about how to achieve the 17 SDGs within the University, by the University Alliance for Sustainable Development. Moreover, there was a Workshop about the separation and recycling of plastics in its 7 categories. Additionally, there was even one about veganism and the environmental impact of meat and cruelty to animals.

Throughout these workshops, more people became interested in how to tackle climate change. This event achieved its goals, and now more academics, CEO¡¯s and students want to collaborate with the Project.  The goal of the Club for this year is to end with the excessive use of disposables at the Science Faculty.  In addition to achieving a sustainable and active University within their community on environmental and climate issues.

In my opinion, the missionary enthusiasm and commitment of the Club members are absolutely encouraging. The way they promote ecologically conscious decisions and conducts through their life examples are worthy to follow. They are a testimony that together we can make it happen.
