Pollution  is  one  of  the  most  dangerous  global  killers.  We  might  not  notice  its
danger  in  our  daily  lives  but  the  problem  is  serious!  It  affects  over  100  million
people  all  over  the  world.  That  is  comparable  to  global  diseases  like  HIV  and
Malaria.  Today, environmental  organizations  are  working  their  best  to  increase
people’s  awareness  and  understanding  of  the  real  danger  we  are  facing.

According  to  the  World  Health  Organization  nearly  7  million  premature  deaths
annually  are  caused  of  lung  cancer,  stroke,  heart  diseases  and  other  infections  all  as
a  result  of  air  pollution.  Over  80%  of  urban  residents  are  exposed  to  air  pollution
levels  that  exceed  WHO  limits,  making  air  pollution  a  real  threat!

Nowadays  air  pollution  has  become  a  commonplace  term  that  our  ears  are  attuned
to,  but  what  causes  air  pollution?   Air  pollution is  mainly  caused  by  liquid  and  solid
particles  and  some  gases.  These  particles  and  gases  come  from  wildfires,  factories,
dust,  etc.  They  are  called  aerosols.  Any  physical,  biological  or  chemical  alteration  to
the  air  can  be  termed  as  air  pollution.  Its  effects  can  range  from  higher  disease  risks
to  rising  global  temperature.  In  US  alone,   nearly  134  million  people  (40%  of  the
population)  are  at  risk  of  premature  death  says  “American  Lung  Association
 Estimates”.

The  Industrial,  Domestic  and  Natural   Causes  of  Air  Pollution  :

• Industry.

Industrialization  is  very  important  for  development  and  economic  growth,
but  it  is  also  very  harmful  to  our  environment.  Air  pollution  has  started  to  become  a
real  deal  since  the  Industrial  Revolution.  The  world  saw  a  major  increase  in  both  the
population  and  living  standards,  which  led  to  depletion  of  resources  and  use  of
chemical  and  fossil  fuels.  The  burning  of  these  chemicals  and  fuels  causes  high
proportion  of  poisonous  gases  like  carbon   monoxide.

• Transportation.

Transportation  has  a  big  impact  on  the  environment,  as  it  is  the  biggest

consumer  of   the  world's  petroleum.   That  creates  nitrous  oxides  and  other

particulates  that  cause  air  pollution.  Also,  it  causes  emission  of   CO2,,  the

significant  contributor  to  global  warming.  In  2013,  transportation

contributed   more  than  half  of  the  carbon  monoxide  and  nitrogen  oxides  and  a

quarter  of  the  hydrocarbons  emitted  in  the  air.

• Agricultural  side  effects.

Some  of  the  practices  associated  with  agriculture   have  negative  impacts  on

the  environment.  Transforming  forests  into  farmland  destroys  habitats  and

releases  carbon  dioxide  into  the  atmosphere.   Also,  it  affects  the  natural

 ecosystems  and  biodiversity.

• Home  heating  and  cooking.

Asbestos,  carbon monoxide,   lead,   mold,  radon  and  volatile organic

compounds  (VOCs)   are  the  most  dangerous  indoor   air  pollutants.  Household

pollution  is   very  dangerous  indeed,  its  level  of  danger  depends  on  the

concentration  of  the  pollutants  in  the  indoor  environment.  About  3.8  million

people  die  of   household  pollution  a  year,  says WHO.

• Wildfires  and  volcanoes.

Not  all  air  pollution  is  caused  by  humans,  here  is  a  natural  air  pollutant.

Fires  can  be  deadly,  destroying  the  wildlife  and  polluting  the  air  with

emissions  harmful  to  human  health  and  spreading  CO2 .  On  the  other  hand,
volcanoes  emit  noxious  gases  that  can  pose  serious  human  and  ecosystem
health  concerns   due  to  volcanic  air  pollution.

• Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)  and  aerosols.

CFC  is  an  organic  compound  that  contains  Carbon,  Chlorine  and  Fluorine,

produced  as  a  volatile  derivative  of  Methane  and  Ethane.  CFCs  have  no

natural  source. The  most  common  emitter  of  CFCs  are  refrigerants.  CFCs  can

ruin  the  ozone  layer,  this  reduces  the  protection  it  offers  from  the  sun's

 harmful  UV  rays.

Why  should  we  reduce  air  pollution?

As  mentioned,  air  pollution  is  becoming  more  dangerous  on  daily  basis.  The  fight
against  pollution  should  concern  everybody  who  wants  to  stay  alive  by  2050.  Kids,
teenagers,  adults  and  elderlies  should  be  a  part  of  this  fight.  Mankind  evolution  was
the  main  reason  for  this  conflict  and  now,  Mankind  is  the  only  solution.  This  is  our
planet,  it  is  time  to  step  up  and  do  something!

This  is  a  real  global  hazard!  Air  pollution  has  negative  effects  on  literally
everything  in  this  planet.  Here  is  a  list  of  the  most  affected  :

• Humans

9/10  people  breathe   polluted  air.  In  2012,  air  pollution  caused  premature

deaths on  an  average  of  1  year  in  Europe.  Most  of  the  affected  people  are

people  of  middle/low  income.  Air  pollution  causes  serious  diseases  that  lead  to

 death.

• Animals

Animals  depend  on  oxygen  from  the  air.  When  the  air  is  contaminated,

harmful  gases  and  toxic  substances  are  inhaled.  Which  may  cost  the   animal

 its life.

• Crops

Crops  can  be  injured  when  exposed  to  high  levels  of  air  pollutants.  Which

reduces  its  growth  and  food  production ,   causes  premature  death  and  economic

loss.  Industrial  and  commercial  activity  damages  the  crops  and  farmland  on

both  short  and  long  terms.  The  biggest  air  pollutants  affecting  plants  are

ammonia,  nitrogen  dioxide,  sulfer  dioxide  and  ozone.

• Water

Pollutants  dissolve  in  water,  causing  direct  water  pollution.  Polluted  water

vapors  and  condenses  with  the  clouds  causing  acid  rain.  This  damages  the

underground  water  and  has  short  term  damage  on  ocean  water.

• Forests

Researches  show  that  air  pollution  has  a  big  impact  on  forests  and

ecosystems. It  damages  the  leaves,  limits  nutrients  and  acid  rain  weakens  the

 trees.

• Ozone  Layer

When  high  energy  electromagnetic  waves  reach  the  earth's  surface,  both

humans  and  animals  are  exposed  to  several  harmful  effects  due  to  the  ozone

layer  depletion.  Direct  expose  to  UV rays  causes  skin  cancer  and  other  skin

 diseases.

Climate  Change  and  Air  Pollution  Are  Closely  Related.

Emissions  of  pollutants  into  the  air  result  in  changes  of  climate.  Climate

change  occurs  when  carbon  dioxide,  pollutants  and  greenhouse  gases  collect  in

the  atmosphere   and  absorb  sunlight  and  radiations  that  have  bounced  off  the

earth’s   surface. Thus,  the  relation  between  air  pollution  and  climate  change  is

direct.  The  UN  intergovernmental   panel  on  climate  change  warned  coal-fired

electricity  must  end  by  2050.  If  not,  we  may  see  a  major  climate  crisis  in

 just  20  years.

The  consequences  of  air  pollution  are  deadly,  but  there  are  things  that  can

 be  done.

• Raising  awareness.

• Planting  trees.

• Conserving  energy.

• Limit  driving  by  carpooling.

• Curb  unbridled  industrialization.
