Virtual Conference: Cool Insights for Hot World

A virtual conference which was organized the FTA (Forests, Trees, and Agroforestry) on 21 to 22 March 2017 was attended by the Indonesian Green Action Forum (IGAF) members and volunteers. In the Conference, they took a part actively on discussing and debating of how to cool human being insights on hot world affected by climate change. In the Conference we attended two times starting on 21 March to 22 March 2017.

All of the sequences of the Conference held on 21 March 2017 was sucessfully reported in the prior report sent to UNEP EPLC. In the second time, we will elaborate the event sequences and activities done by IGAF members and volunteers.

As we know, the Conference was a tremendous virtual conference which discussed about water, climate change, land use, forest, agroforestry, green house gas emission, and so forth. In the regard, these themes were concordance with the IGAF Carbon Farming School so that it was versatile and fruitful for the improvement of the School. In this event, all of speakers emphasized that forests play important roles not only for climate change mitigation and adaptation but also for water reservoir. In addition, when we speak up about forests, we pertain not only carbon sequestration but also water conservation.

In the Conference, there were eminent guest speakers getting involved to discuss these above-themes. They were such as from CIFOR, ICRAF, FAO, Wegeningen University, WeForests, Norwegian University of Life Sciences, King?s College London, Erlangen University, INRA, ENKI, and Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. For the detail, you can refer the leaflet provided in this report.

Under head of Mr. Achmad Solikhin, IGAF members were urged to be actively asking question related the issues discussed. In addition, they could connect their questions with the IGAF Carbon Farming School since the School was established to tackle climate change issues via agroforest system.

After the session of YOU (Questions and Answers), IGAF members hitted the Conference via dominating questions to the guest speakers. The questions were mostly from Mr. Achmad Solikhin with the following questions proposed:

Cool Insights Conference: Eminent Scientists and Guest Speakers

1.      How can forest substantiate the nexus approach (water, food, and climate change)?

2.      Why water is not included and counted into dangerous green house gas emission but carbon dioxyde is more considered?

3.      As think tankers, applying science or research is not only a theory but also must be technically actualized. How the think tankers can deal with all of forest and climate change policy so that it will be not just buzzy words?

All of the proposed questions were answered well by the scientists and logically well-understoon by us. For further information about the answers, you can propogate to open this link: www.cifor.org/cool-insights-for-a-hot-world-virtual-symposium/

As we know, the Conference was precedded by an internationally published paper entitled ?Trees, forests and water: cool insights for a hot water?. The result of the paper was further convened to the world because of its importance for better future.

Finally, due to the activeness of our delegate, especially Mr. Achmad Solikhin, he was highly appreciated to be a winner of the questioning proposed. In addition, we got tremendous concern from the CIFOR and ICRAF scientists due to our courage and eagerness towards forest and water issues as well as climate change. For furher information, you can refer this below picture illustrating our active participation and reward for better forests, trees, and agroforestry.

In the picture, Mr. Achmad Solikhin was granted by the committee due to his activeness. He got a beautiful souveneir from ICRAF. He also started to link the IGAF Carbon Farming School with the Conference. He understood that in hot world caused by climate change, the IGAF Carbon Farming can contribute to cool the condition by providing several ecological contributions, which are:

1.      Raising ecologial awareness to children, youth, and local communities of how to take real actions for tackling climate change,

2.      Providing carbon reservoirs through social forestry activities, such as: seedling distribution and plantation,

3.      Applying simple and starategic technologies - based community, namely agroforest and biocomposite for better forestry and agriculture management,

4.      Actualizing set theories of scientists into sustainable real actions packed into a school, such as land rehabilitation activities, carbon counting, and so forth.

5.      Engaging mutual partnership not only for targeted participants but also scientists also contribute to the School development.
