#BEAT PLASTIC POLLUTION!

by Anghy Aquino | 28-06-2023 15:18 recommendations 0

"Every piece of plastic ever produced still exists today. It's time to stop using plastic and start healing the planet." - Captain Paul Watson

This phrase by Paul Watson, environmentalist and founder of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, a non-governmental organization, and protector of seals, dolphins, whales, sharks, turtles, and other marine animals, could not sum up better how harmful plastic can be for the environment due to its great durability. It takes an estimated 100 to 1,000 years for plastic to decompose.

It is very important to recycle and reduce the use of plastic as much as possible, so many public and private organizations and institutions are working towards this goal. In this opportunity, I would like to tell you about the activities organized by the municipalities of my district and province in which I participate. One of them is called "Ecotrueque" ("Eco-exchange") and consists of taking your recyclable waste (bottles, notebooks, bond sheets, cardboard, cans, and metal waste) to the municipality to be weighed and later exchanged for recycled products such as backpacks, pencil cases, plastic containers, and others. The more recyclable waste you bring, the more prizes and products you get. In the "Ecotrueque", not only neighbors participate but also schools, high schools, and small businesses in the district. This wonderful initiative promotes recycling and raises awareness among the district's population about the importance of caring for the environment.

I have participated in the "Ecotrueque" ("Eco-exchange") twice and will continue to do so as long as the municipality continues to organize it. The first time, I brought 5 kilos of plastic bottles and got two recycled plastic containers. The second time, I brought 4 kilos of plastic bottles and cardboard and received in return a small plastic tub and two pencils. "Ecotrueque" is an activity that I love, and I hope it will continue for a long time.

Another activity carried out by the municipality of my province (Huancayo) is the call for volunteers to clean up the rivers. The municipality has called up to 50 volunteers in one day, and they have collected hundreds of kilos of solid waste made of plastic and other materials from several rivers in Huancayo. This activity promotes citizen participation and involvement in the care of the rivers and the environment. I have participated in a cleanup of the Shullcas River in Huancayo. This was a pleasant experience since I not only helped to clean an area of the river, but I also met incredible human beings, very responsible, conscious, and nature-loving people.

These are some of the strategies used by my district and province to beat plastic pollution and have been successful so far, as large amounts of recyclable waste have been collected and several areas of Huancayo's rivers have been cleaned up.

Our actions can make a big change, so let's keep recycling and participating in activities that promote environmental care.

    Hello Arjun,
It's a pleasure to clarify it for you 😊. The products we redeem are made from recycled plastic from other products.
    Thank you for reading.

Your work is really inspiring. I was just wondering, however, in "Ecotrueque", I noticed you said that you can trade certain items for plastic containers. To me, that seems a bit counterintuitive as the whole initiative is about limiting plastic pollution. Maybe I misunderstood something, but I was wondering if you could clarify this for me.
