Bhandwari Landfill Where the waste disposal happens

The Aravalli forests in Gurugram, India and the hills surrounding India's National Capital Region are home to many leopards, nilgais, jackals, civet cats, reptiles, birds, and other wildlife. They are also the biggest source of recharge for Delhi-NCR's groundwater and have the potential to push 2 million litres of water per hectare into the ground every year. The Aravalli forest also serves as lungs to millions of population residing nearby..

But unfortunately, the existence of the Bandhwari landfill in the middle of the eco-sensitive Aravallis is poisoning this lifeline. The landfill was formed in the year 2009 in an abandoned 250-foot-deep mining pit, which is very close to the groundwater aquifer that feeds Delhi, Gurugram, and Faridabad.2000 tonnes of Gurugram and Faridabad's unsegregated mixed waste is dumped in this landfill every day. Plastic, electronic, and biomedical waste have created a toxic mix, which pollutes the soil, air, surface water bodies, and groundwater.

The situation of overflowing of leachate, the liquid that emanates from solid waste, worsens during the monsoon season or on days when there is heavy rainfall. Recent reports says that foxes living in Aravalli forest has died because of drinking the untreated water. The leachate also seeps into the groundwater which the nearby villagers drinks and are affected very much. Many people inhaling the toxic smoke and fumes are suffering from cancer but still no waste management system is carried out in this region.

In conclusion, the government of Gurugram is promoting waste segregation at source implementating recycling programs and exploring alternative waste management techniques such as Waste to Energy plants are been setup but still it posses challenges. As responsible citizens its important to support waste reduction , recycling and proper disposal practices to alleviate the strains on such landfill sites and safeguard our environment for future generations.
