Renewable energy

Hello Fellow Ambassadors, Renewable energy is the future of energy. Using fossil fuels for generating energy has a negative impact on environment and this source will not last long. In order to meet the consumer demands & to take care of environment, renewable energy must be chosen as the prime source of energy.

Over the past decade, the U.A.E. has demonstrated a serious commitment to the development of renewable and alternative energy. The U.A.E. is currently
installing four major nuclear power plants in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. It is also
playing a leading role in solar, wind, and other renewable energy projects both in the U.A.E. and abroad.

The nuclear energy is clean & Solar power is also clean source of energy. But the solar power generation is not sufficient for the industry needs & it is costly. Still, Solar power is among a mix of renewable energy sources being deployed across the UAE — and the wider region — as governments seeks to keep pace with rising demand for electricity, thanks to rising populations, industrialisation and urbanisation. As announced in the UAE Energy Strategy 2050, the nation wants to double the contribution of clean and nuclear energy in the total energy mix and reduce the carbon footprint of its power generation processes by 70 per cent.

The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is one of the world's largest renewable project based on an independent power producer (IPP) model. Besides the three phases that consist of solar farms using PV technology, the long-term project will also include concentrating solar power (CSP).The total capacity of the entire project is planned to reach 5,000 MWp.

By the end of 2019, 10 per cent of all citizens¡¯ homes in Dubai will be energy self-sufficient with free solar power as the UAE works to implement its energy goals. The project, which began last month, will see the installation of photovoltaic solar panels as well as energy-saving lights and water-savers to rationalise the use of electricity and water in the homes of UAE nationals. The homes will then be connected to the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority grid.

Finally, significant cost reductions have brightened the case for renewables. Dubai¡¯s costs of producing solar energy is among the lowest in the world. At the same time, technology has evolved to allow cost efficiencies in other areas.

Therefore, I firmly believe the renewable energy has the bright future in the modern world that will take care of the environmental aspects as well.

    Hi Rohan

You described the situation of implementation of renewable energy in UAE.

As you mentioned, dilemma in applying renewable energy is that production of the electricity through renewable energy is much less than fossil fuels, but the demand in electricity is growing day by day. I think the best solution to this problem is consistent and sustainable technical research.

I hope UAE becomes 100% clean city along with other neighboring nations.

Thank you for the great report.

    Hey Rohan,
    this is Lisa your mentor!

Thank you so much for sharing the story of your own country involving the topic of this month.
I am truly impressed by how U.A.E. has succeeded in reducing the cost of renewable energy as well as innovating technologies that are necessary for renewable energy.
I personally think that even more than technology and science, the price matters when dealing with renewable energy because even if we have great innovations, if those are very expensive then it would be in no use.
That's why I believe that not only the scientific field but also the domain of politics, economics, and international relations should also engage in their own way to promote renewable energy in our society.
I wonder how your country managed to lower the cost!
I think it will be a great model for many countries in the world that are having trouble with reducing the cost of renewable energy.

Thanks for the great article, and green cheers for you!
