April 2019 Feature: The effect of Immigration on the Environment

Americans planted trees, organized park clean-ups and hosted community events to promote conservation and sustainability for Earth Day 2019. All those activities are important. But they don't address one of America's biggest environmental challenges — rapid population growth. Since the first Earth Day in 1970, the U.S. population has increased from 205 million to 327 million. It'll surge to 404 million by 2060, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Would adding another 77 million people to the United States cause great harm to the environment? It¡¯s a question we need to ask ourselves. It's not too late to put America on a more sustainable path, but that would mean having an honest discussion about what¡¯s driving U.S. population growth. Almost 90 percent of population growth is fueled by immigration, according to Pew Research. Humanely scaling back future levels of immigration would help America pursue a sustainable future.

Earth Day's founder, the late Senator Gaylord Nelson (D-Wisconsin), recognized the need to address immigration levels.

"It's phony to say 'I'm for the environment but not for limiting immigration,' " he noted. "It's just a fact that we can't take all the people who want to come here."

He's right. Nearly 160 million people around the world want to move to the United States. There's no feasible way to accept them all. Which means Americans need to make hard choices about who we let in and, most importantly, how many.

While making policy advice is weird for a high schooler, we need to find a way to curb the amount of immigration coming to America. While America strains itself environmentally to sustain its ever growing population, other countries with lower populations where immigrants are coming from may have an easier time lowering their footprint.

    Hi Aaditya,

I hope you are well. The U.S has gained it's economic name due to the nature of immigrants who came into the country. i get a feeling that not it has reached an economic standard that no other country can come against, and due to the fact that they are amongst the top five emit when it comes to pollution and exporting their waste elsewhere, they look to 'immigration' as a problem that, if solved, will bring about radical change. that it completely not true.

Many other countries have an immigration problem. I don't believe that people leave their own countries for no reason , but to look for a better future. I think they should look into having a healthy talk on immigration and have both perspectives talk about it and not just look at the policy aspect but the human-care aspect too.

Thank you for your report, it was though-provoking and informative!

    With gratitude,
    Rosa Tiimuma Domingos

    Hi Aaditya,

Thank you for your report on the effect of Immigration on the Environment. It was great to know about immigration policies of America and in fact based on my understandings, USA currently has a lot of immigrants from neighboring countries such as Mexico and South America countries. As there are many different interests involved in immigration, it is important to reach a consensus for a better solution, and the government should try its best to bring everyone to the table. I'd like to know more about this. Thank you.

    Hello Aaditya

Thank you for sharing this report with us. :) I think this report povides a new perspective on immigration policy in America. I have never linked growing number of immigrants to environmental problems. Since immigration policy should consider its social and economic asepcts as well, reaching the consensus in this issue seems to be very difficult.

    Greetings Aaditya,

America has grown immensely in terms of economic power due to the many immigrants, so it was surprising to see it in this different perspective, that the growing population can actually have a negative effect in terms of achieving sustainable future.
Though it seems only feasible that America should put a constraint on the newcomers to the country, it looks as though the problem could not become easily solved.
Thank you for this report, this has made us see it in a different perspective.
