If it's about biodiversity it's impossible for you to forget about the countries rich in biodiversities like Brazil, Philippines many others and yes Nepal too. Nepal alone claims from the highest peak of the world i.e. Mount Everest to the lowest point of Nepal i.e. Kechana Kawal. Nepal has Mountains, Hills and Plain land i.e. Terai. That's why, at the same period of time; you can experience cold and play snow in mountain region; enjoy cold and temperate climate in Hills along with summer in Terai. So varieties of plants and animals are found in Nepal on the basis of these ecological zones. There are six biomes occurring in Nepal, including as many as 35 forest types and 118 ecosystems. So you can simply imagine how diverse Nepal is in the case of biodiversity. Example: Yarshagumba(Cordyceps sinenseis) and the one horned rhino are the most valuable flora and fauna found in Nepal, among others. Spiny Babbler (Kande Bhyakur in Nepal) is the only bird found in Nepal. It is a rare species of bird. Nepal is a country for the source of raw materials for the medicinal herbs and other plants. Various kind of medicinal and aromatic plants possesses a big contribution for the balance of ecosystem and also on people's economy. Of the total number of species found globally, Nepal possesses 2.80 percent plants. There were 120 endangered Bengal tigers in Nepal in 2009 but Nepal has made a huge leap by increasing it's number to 235 now. There are several many examples in how rich Nepal is in context of biodiversity. But over few years Nepal is experiencing challenges in protection and conservation of these biodiversity. Urbanization, industrialization, globalization, illegal poaching and poor implementation of laws and rules are some major reasons behind this. This has led to disturbances in the natural habitat of flora and fauna; this is no way justice, isn't it? Nowadays, there's a news on elephant that enters human settlement destroying crops and human habitat. Rhinoceros from Chitwan National Park enters the nearby villages. This isn't only in newspaper I have read but I have admitted it personally. Early morning, people shous and alert people about rhinoceros prevalence in villages. Many animals that had entered human settlement had become victim of several electric fences shock and poaching. These problems haven't emerged naturally in human settlement but are the results of our own activities. Natural habitat of all the flora and fauna need to be conserved. There should be well established environment for the prosperous existence of all the living creatures. Awareness and proper implementation of rules and regulations is today's need. |

Thank you for your report on the biodiversity in Nepal and how it is being destroyed in current days. It is very sad to hear that such blessed and beautiful biodiversity is threatened by illegal poachers and rapid industrialization. People must understand the importance of protecting natural habitats of plants and animals. Thank you for bringing up this very important issue with us. : )

Yes, Nepal is in threat to biodiversity loss. Side-by-side nowadays many activists are being active towards protection of nature.

Thank you for letting us to know about biodiversity in Nepal. Indeed it is a blessing that varieties of plants and animals are found in Nepal on the basis of these ecological zones. But it is sad to hear that recently Nepal is experiencing challenges in protection and conservation of these biodiversity. I think it is really up to Nepal government to preserve the biodiversity and they should keep up with what they are doing. With government's efforts, I believe biodiversity in Nepal can be well-preserved. Great work!

It's been a while, I trust you are well!
Wow, Nepal is truely blessed with a diverse spectrum of species. Starting from floral...all the way to fauna. I am particularly impressed with the medicinal qualities that forests have.
I truely sympathise with the fauna that are subdued to electrical shocks and fences. All they know is to roam around and just live freely. And if humans are frightened by their presence, just imagine how the elephants and rhinos feel?
Hence the need for awareness is paramount to an ecological balance between flora, fauna and the human species as a whole.
