SAND MINING IN SIERRA LEONE |

Sierra Leone is a country blessed with many beautiful coastal beaches on which tourists and even locals often spend leisure time with friends, families and loved ones. This beauty is diminishing day-by-day because of the indiscriminate and illegal sand mining activities. Lakka beach for instance, located in the far western part of the capital Freetown, was once an attractive centre, a beautiful beach for foreign nationals and citizens, but its beauty have now gone to past and can only be remembered by those who had experienced its beauty those days. If you happen to visit this particular beach presently, the aftermath of this illegal mining activity is clearly seen and really appalling. Many houses and structures have been destroyed by erosion. Rocks that were hidden can now be seen clearly. The Atlantic ocean is gradually encroaching into the land destroying settlements and posing serious threats to the remaining structures. The more sand is tipped from these coastal beaches, the greater the effects, which causes serious environmental destruction to houses, structures and communities. |

Thanks for all your comments. This has a very big problem for previous and successive government. We hope and pray that the present sitting government together with other NGOs and the sand miners will help salvage this situation.
I will keep on giving updates about this menace throughout my ambassadorial term

Hi Joseph,
Thank you for your report about sand mining in Sierra Leone. When I took African art class, I heard a lot about coastal beaches and the beauty of them. It's disheartening to hear that those beaches might be no longer available because of illegal sand mining. Also, I'm very concerned that safety of people living near is threatened as houses become easier to collapse. I look forward to your next report.

Hi Joseph,
Thank you for your report on Sand mining and thanks to your report, I have gained more understanding on this topic and harmful effects from this illegal mining process. We should definitely stop this if the mining process is not legal and harmful to environment because such mining is not sustainable and as UN stated, Sustainable Development is one of the key objectives of the United Nations. Please keep us updated about this issue and I truly hope that the government can have a look at it and come up with feasible measures to stop such act.

The first thing that comes to my mind when i hear about Sierra leone is diamond mines. This piece of information will add to my knowledge about beautiful sand mines and the harmful effects caused due to mining.
Thank You @Joseph for the report
