Free report: Road broomers in Kathmandu (Air Pollution)

by Asmita Gaire | 15-04-2019 12:28 recommendations 0

Kathmandu- Road broomers are being used to clean dusty roads in the Kathmandu Valley.

The Ministry of Water Supply and Sanitation had earlier instructed the authorities concerned to clean the Valley¡¯s roads with the use of machines after the laying of water pipes carried out under the Melamchi Water Supply Project.

There were complaints from the public against increasing dust pollution in the Valley as roads had been left without proper cleaning after the installation of underground pipes which has directed the authorities to use the machines to address the public concerns. The Kathmandu Metropolitan City brought its five new Italian broomer machines Dulevo-6000 into operation, it announced five different routes where the machines would be deployed to clean the city roads. But the machines have reached only a few VVIP road sections so far, neglecting other areas of the Valley.

¡°We saw pictures and videos of the broomer machines on social media and read about the metropolis¡¯s announcement for their operation. It was as though the officials were launching a rocket to the moon,¡± said Laxmi Narayan Khadgi, 45, who runs Laxmi Bakery in Mitranagar, Chabahil. ¡°But we have yet to see the machines cleaning the roads in our area.¡±

¡°We had high hopes that the new broomer machines will give us some respite from the dust,¡± said Pradeep Upadhyay, 33, a sweets shop owner at Chabahil chowk. ¡°The roads here are so dusty that we have to sprinkle water on them every 15 minutes. I guess these broomer machines are brought for the VVIP areas only.¡±

The metropolis had announced to bring 10 broomer machines earlier in April 2017 to make Kathmandu a ¡®mask-free city¡¯, but it failed to do so at the time. Two years later, the metropolis has brought five broomer machines at a cost of Rs 108 million.

Various plans are being made but when it comes under implementation only 50% get implemented, this might be because of political instability and other possible reasons in Nepal. Hope it be tackled very soon and country people and environment should no more suffer.

    Hello Asmita!

Thank you for your report about road groomers in Kathmandu. As fine dust has become a huge problem in Korea, the government increased the number of road groomers. I heard that introducing such machines can financially burden the government. I wish the benefits of this road cleaning will be available to all the citizens in Nepal soon. Thank you for your report : )

Yes, it's cost must be the reason for developing countries like ours are taking long time to introduce it in country.
    Thank you!

    Hi Asmita,

Road Groomers also exit in Korea and our Road Groomers scatter water on the street to make it clean! I heard it is pretty expensive for government to introduce such cars and I sincerely hope that the government's efforts will be successful!

    Hello Anishka
Nepal is a small country and development would have become very fast and there wouldn't have been so much of these problems of government was active in these matters.
I hope next time you visit Nepal, these all problems would get solved.

    Hi Asmita,
Your report has highlighted the efforts and proposals being taken by Nepal government to make the city mask free. I have been to Nepal and I was surprised to see people wearing black mask because of air pollution. Despite all the proposals and efforts the city has still not got the required amount of broomers, it is sad to know.

  • Rosa Domingos says :
    Hey there Asmita!

It is sad to see the project what was to bring 10 broomers into the city fail. And it is much more painful to the citizens who have to watch and wait for the broomers to eventually reach their area. Air pollution brings a huge concern to the health of the young, old and those in-between. And I hope that the issue to providing a service to the locals in the Valleys is rendered in due time.

This report really shared light on what is currently occurring in Nepal, in particular Kathmandu and I would like to thank you for sharing!

A Warm regards to you Asmita,
    Sincerely,
    Rosa

    Hello Asmita Gaire!
Very interesting innovation! I've never seen a car like this. And I really hope that they will effectively cope with the dust of the roads.
In Russia, the roadway is washed only in large cities. In Moscow, for example, roads are washed even in the rain. But in small towns this, unfortunately, is not observed.
    Thanks for the report!
