In recent years, Myanmar has been developed rapidly and there are both advantages and disadvantages in many areas. One clear example is 670,000 cars had been imported into the country since 2011 and consequently thousands of hundreds of imported cars are in the country. People come to use private cars more than in the past and we have to face heavy traffic in rush hours which is pretty bothering. At that kind of hours, the emission of carbon dioxide from vehicles are too much. There are no specific data about carbon emission in Mandalay.
In addition, middle class people use motorbike mostly for their daily works. Enormous amount of cars and motorbikes are the main source of CO2 emission. On the one hand, using public transportation will be one way to solve this problem. However, public transportation(tram, bus) is not that common in Mandalay,Myanmar. In Mandalay region, current AQI(air quality index) is 151 which is at unhealthy stage and sometimes, the highest is 189. In rainy season, the government and local people always make an event of growing various kinds of plants in many parts of the country which is a good sign of maintaining good weather and environment. According to WHO data, 22,000 deaths per year in Myanmar is due to the diseases caused by air pollution. A spokesperson of the WHO Myanmar office said " inefficient modes of transport, inefficient combustion of household fuels for cooking, lighting and heating, coal-fired power plants, industrial agriculture and waste burning " are the main reasons of outdoor air pollution in Myanmar. We should use more bikes and public transportation (Mandalay was once famous for using bikes among other cities in the past) to reduce toxic gases in the air. Furthermore, advance technologies in manufacturing processes are indeed necessary to apply for the developing country like Myanmar. |

Hi Thawdar,
Thank you for this report, and I truly agree with you that we should use public transportation to reduce toxic gases in the air because air pollution is really closely related to the toxic gases including carbon dioxide. In fact, I usually ride bicycles when I have to go somewhere and ride bus when it requires long distance travel. I also think that it is important to build awareness to reduce the air pollution. Anyways this is a very nice report!

Hello thawdar
Yes the survey also shows that developing countries are responsible for air pollution from vehicles that are mostly outdated and old rather than that of developed countries.
Special attention is must.
Green cheers

In Myanmar, 22000 people die because of this problem? Its so sad((
Youre right, we should all promote healthy lifestyle. Can you organise an event with local organisations and askdrivers to let go of private automobiles for 1 day))?
Itd be a good initiative

Hello Thawdar Aung!
Thank you for your report about the air pollution problem in Myanmar. As you mentioned in your report, cars and motor bikes are one of the biggest causes of air pollution. Poor air quality not only degrade the quality of everyday life but also is linked to a variety health concerns, ranging from short-term irritation to serious diseases. Development of transportation using renewable and clean energy must be expected but we can also take a part in by using less transportation. I look forward to your next report!
