The Ikogosi Warm Spring |

As our monthly theme for February focuses on regional or national environment that is so iconic to introduce to others though it is not well known internationally, I bring to us the Ikogosi Warm Spring.
The Ikogosi warm spring located in the town of Ikogosi-Ekiti, Nigeria is one of tourist attractions of this country as there are historical stories around it. The most amazing part of the Ikogosi Warm Spring is that, a cold spring flows side by side together with a warm one. The mystery is such that both springs of Ikogosi (warm and cold) originate from a close source, met at a point, and flow continuously together with each of the springs having its thermal property unchanged. The temperature of the warm spring has been measured to be about 70oC at the source and 37oC after meeting the cold spring. The meeting point of the warm and cold springs has been the center of attraction. There have been a number of myths surrounding the origin and discovery of the Warm Spring. These myths have lasted for centuries even till now. The two most popular of such myths are; “That the warm and cold springs were the two wives of a great hunter, which one of his wives was said to be temperamental while the other was a quiet woman. One day, a fight broke out between the two wives after being rebuked by their husband. As result of this, the temperamental wife changed to the warm spring while the quiet one turned to the cold spring.” “The second legend has it that it was a powerful hunter, while hunting for animals in the forest that first found the warm spring. Thereafter, he went to town to inform the people and the townspeople on learning about curative powers of the spring, began to worship the spring as a god.” Initially, when the spring was newly discovered, the accessibility to the meeting point of the warm and cold spring was poor as the road or path to the place was bad. But now, a lot has been done to make the spring and its surroundings more beautiful. Jimoh Babatunde in Vanguard newspaper described that The architectural design of the entrance gate against the landscaping of the over 116- hectare resort was a reminder of the scenic beauty of Obudu resort from the base. With the security check done with, a drive into the resort reveal eye catching newly built chalets and a reception building. The major surprise was the landscaping of the resort matched with beautifully manicured flowers being tended to by gardeners. Behind the reception is the newly constructed 1000 capacity amphitheatre, arts and crafts centre. As you moved towards the meeting point of the cold and warm water, you cannot but marveled at the ingenuity that has been brought to play with the construction of a walk trail. In the past, tourists wade through dirty paths and bush to get to the meeting point as well as the tiny source from which the warm and cold water spring forth. A walk on the trail envelops one with that tranquillity one gets walking a nature trail as all you hear is the chirpings of birds and the coolness of a thick forest through which you walk through. Ikogosi resort could pass for an eco-tourism destination because of the preservation of the flora and fauna there.” The Ikogosi Warm Spring is a place you would like to pay a visit. The place seems really interesting and great to visit. It was surprising to hear about both cold and warm water flowing through the same springs. The place looks to have really high tourism value.Hope the government places good importance towards the place.
