Food security can be looked as when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life. It is certain that food insecurity and malnutrition affects all age groups which is one of the main risks to human health. Children, youth, men, women and elderly person are adversely affected by food insecurity and malnutrition. In the 1990’s a good number of people suffering from hunger decreased. In this our present time the number of people living in food insecurity has increased. It will be a heartbreaking new for not achieving the projected 2030 agenda of zero hunger of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Food insecurity and malnutrition is one of the most important consequences of about 9million deaths recorded yearly worldwide due to hunger and hunger-related diseases.

In most parts of Africa many people suffer from a hidden hunger. There are too many malnourished children in Africa and this causes physical and mental development delays and disorders and consequently high mortality rate.  Some of the contributing factors of food insecurity that hits the African population include extreme weather events and climate change, recurrent outbreaks of pests and diseases, limited availability and adoption of yield-increasing technologies, lack of good food storage facilities, war and socio-economic crisis. These extremist have exposed fragilities of Africa’s food systems, undermining the ability to meet the food demand of a growing population. For example, the recent COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, the Anglophone crisis in Cameroon, Niger have disrupted the supply chain for agricultural inputs, fuel, and food. The Eastern part of Africa alone lost about to 2 million livestock in a year due to recurrent drought and low response capacity. 

To curb this food insecurity crisis, systemic model have highlighted agricultural transformative part way as the way forward that can be scaled up across the continent to boost food insecurity. Some important ways of addressing food insecurity involve the enhancement of African governments capacities to design and implement policies, improving on climate resilience strategies, responding to climate risk breed and releasing varieties of crops and livestock that are climate adaptive and scaling them up. More also Africans need to diversify their food system by moving to the indigenous and resilient crops and

support African farmers to adopt climate smart policies, technologies, and practices, including agro forestry system and rehabilitation of degraded lands, wetlands, and protected areas to enhance carbon sequestration and reduce carbon losses. Adopting free trade and providing an enabling environment for financial sector to supply business and financial tools to Agricultural small and medium scale enterprises. Non-sustainable farming practices like rain fed agriculture should not be over relied on but rather adapting it with other sustainable drip irrigation.

Africa has always been an importing continent that fails to consume more of what they produce but rather chooses to export more of their produce and import more of what they do not produce. To create the Africa we want, were everyone can  free access to a healthy and affordable diets for all  we need to ensure that national systems have the capacity to convert climate policies and commitments into action, In other to level up Africa’s exposure and reduces her vulnerability to food insecurity vulnerability, we need to amplify sustainable agricultural practices. Climate advisories and climate change literacy and awareness centers can help make the difference between coping and informed adaptation responses. By abiding to these terms Africa’s food systems will become more resilient and guarantee access to healthy and affordable diets for all.
