During 2018, Saudi Arabia has unveiled its enormous USD $200 million Organic Action Plan, aiming to increase the country¡¯s organic production by 300 percent, with an eye towards reducing water consumption. In Saudi Arabia, agriculture is the largest consumer of water, and as much as 80 percent of its non-replenishable fossil water has already been consumed. Organic farming can help farmers increase their production without burdening the country¡¯s scarce water resources. Palladium is helping Saudi Arabia implement the fifth phase of its Organic Action Plan and grow the organic agriculture sector into a sustainable market. Palladium is an entity functioning to strengthen the capacity of Saudi Arabia¡¯s monitoring authorities, its organic agriculture research, organic certification and production, technology support, and marketing activities. Palladium is partnering with the government, experts, a farmer¡¯s cooperative, and on-the-ground private sector farmers. They are working directly with the Department of Organic Production at the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA), the Organic Agriculture Research Centre (OARC), and the Saudi Organic Farming Association (SOFA). Using this relationship, Palladium will be encouraging investment opportunities that will lead to more employment, increased incomes, and higher food production, and more, healthier food that is better for the people and the environment. By working with partners across the value chain, we¡¯re ensuring the sector stays sustainable long after Palladium leaves. We¡¯re training the Department of Organic Production and other partners to strengthen their capacity to manage this transformation. Saudi Arabia has made sure this Organic Action Plan takes a long view. The plan is to be implemented in three phases over the next 12 years, and fits within the KSA Vision 2030 and the National Transformation Plan 2020, ensuring it stays aligned with the country¡¯s overall, long-term priorities. More and more consumers are becoming interested in ¡°safe¡± food, but without a sustainable market the supply – and demand – will stay underdeveloped. Palladium will help increase consumer awareness of the benefits of organic farming by establishing marketing incentives that influence supply and demand. Also helping develop a Saudi National Organic logo and create the regulatory infrastructure to support the organic agriculture sector, so the government can effectively regulate organic production, instilling confidence in consumers. |

Hello Lohita, Saudi Arabia's effort and plan to enhance food productivity and choose organic farming seem so nice in such region since it needs a lot of money and drainage system to keep water supply up to the certain level.
With sustainable market and demand, it will definitely work out well to keep the cost under expensive level and then it will move onto the better system I think :)
Thanks for sharing an unique news about Saudi Arabia to us!

I just knew that Organic Farming requires less water. I also detailed study on it as it belongs to my field of study.
Large quantities of water are used for farming around the world, and some
environmentalists argue this has contributed to the global water crisis.
In Asia, which contains
two-thirds of the world's irrigated land, 85 percent of available water is
used for irrigation.
A study released by Cornell University Professor David Pimentel in 2005
reported that organic farming produces the same corn and soybean yields as
conventional farming and uses 30 percent less energy and less water.
Moreover, because organic farming systems do not use pesticides, they also
yield healthier produce and do not contribute to groundwater pollution.
Thank you for your report Lohita
Hope a successful chain gets established there about the organic farming as it tends to save water sources there and can turn out to be huge advantage in the country with very less water resources.

Hello Lohita, didn't know that farming consumes so much water.
And I do agree that
'without a sustainable market the supply – and demand – will stay underdeveloped. '
It is true that for the organic market to grow, integrated cooperation within every subject of the value chain is needed.
Thanks for the report :)
