Earthquake is already a terrible disaster. Add tsunami and soil liquefaction, and its triple the trouble. These triple disasters had recently appeared in Donggala and Palu, cities in Indonesia, on 28 September 2018. The tsunami happened along Talise beach of Palu as well as the beach in Donggala. According to BMKG website (Indonesia¡¯s Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency), the cause of the tsunami was due to an earthquake with a magnitude of a 7,7 Richter scale. Thousands of lives were lost, hundreds missing, thousands injured, as well as thousands of buildings ruined.
Could all of this be prevented? Earthquake is a natural phenomenon in which we could not avoid, but could prepare for the worst. Such as education on how to react during an earthquake, build earthquake resistant building, also packed bags filled with food supplies and clothes ready to go during an evacuation. A tsunami itself happens due to a chain reaction caused by an earthquake. Since the water in the sea are shaken, the waves could get bigger and bigger. The waves would disappear when it hits something, and it usually is buildings. That means the effect could be dampened or it could even disappear if it hits something before the buildings. For example, coconut trees, casuarina trees, mangroves, and coral reef. Those four are part of the beach ecosystem. They serve as a barrier, like the concrete barriers along the beach. They would fend of the waves as well as stop beach degradation. Besides protecting us, we benefit from them through economic means such as tourism and fishery. That is why we must take care of the ecosystem at the beach. Reference: |

Well written Ida. Wave absorption would definitely help control tsunamis.

Hello Ida
Natural disasters are hard to avoid however that does not mean that we can't do anything on this issue. As mentioned in the report, letting nature be themselves as their original stance would help and also by acknowledging people of the danger and ways to prepare would definitely reduce damages.
Thanks for the report!

Hello Ida, if we can't prevent or block tsunami's occurrence, what we can do is just to let it go within our territory weaker than its primary power and level. Like you just said in your report, using natural sources or environmental barrier would make a huge difference rather than lining up the long seashore background with buildings straight up. It would be better off for other creatures living near the sea to live in, and they would disappear or give out notice to the people who did not acknowledge the upcoming tsunami.
Thanks for your report!

Hey Ida!
Natural disasters are not something to overlook, they destroy habitats, lives get lost and not to mention a major blow to the economic section of a nation. it is truely tragic that the two cities suffers major damage and loss. I do believe, as you have mentioned, necessary precautions could have been done, or can be done for the future.
Naturally, the flora species you have mentioned play a big role as being the first defense from tidal waves, this is why conservation of such species are mandatory.
I enjoyed reading your report, though sad, it truely reflected what Indonesia faces. Thank you for informing us Ida!
