Food Wastage during Festivals

by Kushal Naharki | 15-10-2018 01:27 recommendations 0

Festival seasons have began in Nepal with Dashain, Tihar and Chhat festival already knocking the doors. Large amount of food is wasted during this festivals.

Nepal is a food deficit land locked and least developed country, having a population of more than 27 million people. Around 31 percent people in the country live below poverty level. Around 49.3 percent of under-five children are chronically malnourished. Globally, Nepal ranks 145th out of 182 countries in terms of its Human Development Index (UNDP, 2009).

Although large amount of food is wasted during festivals, there are large portion of people who are celebrating these festivals empty stomach and large hungry animals roaming on streets . People must be conscious and make best utilization of food without wasting because large amount of money, energy and resources have been invested on the food from farmers in the field, manufacturing company to the people cooking it at home.

There's a lot we can do to reduce the food waste that's costing our families, depleting our natural resources, and contributing to climate change.

1.Plan ahead—before meals, especially large meals at the holidays, plan out how much food you and your guests need and stock up accordingly.

2.Donate whatever you can?t use to the people and animals who need this.

3.Store your leftovers safely.

4.Compost your food scraps instead of simply throwing them out.

5. Implementing policy relating to food waste and food security

This festival season, let's commit to reducing food waste so we can help feed the hungry, fight climate change, and save money. Lets make a contribution towards Sustainable Goal No. 2 Zero Hunger and Goal No. 12 Responsible Consumption and Production

LET'S SAY NO TO FOOD WASTE

Hello Kushal, there are many festivals held over my town since there are quite many universities around. After the parties, I truly see tons of garbage without classified into its types and see them thrown out to garbage truck soon.
The truth is lots of them are from food we order and eat during the festival days and weeks, and we are wasting way too many edible resources without thought. It is also against the environmental justice, since there are more than 1.2 billion people who live with money less than $1 for each day.
The best way to enjoy our festival must be followed up with precise plan and event management, leaving little amount of remaining food and waste aftermath.
    Thanks for your report!

    Hello Kushal
Festival seasons should be congratulated and enjoyed whole heartedly however we should be more cautious about waste problems during these seasons as people do get a bit careless than their usual selves. Thanks for the guidelines :)
    Thanks for the report!

    Kushal,

Food wastage is actually a unfair attitude, particularly in a nation where we have children who spend there days with empty stomach. Our leftovers could be someone's 1st meal.

Your steps to stopping food wastage are very impressive.

    Thanks for the report.

Hello Kushal! Very strong report! You're right: when there are so many people starving in the world, there is no place for extravagance. I fully support the ideas you put forward.
