Ozone Depletion & Efforts to stop it

by Rohan Kapur | 12-09-2018 16:22 recommendations 0

Greetings! Fellow Ambassadors. Ozone depletion is a grave problem & worldwide many projects are undertaken to contain the same & we are successful in this area also. The scientists are keeping a keen eye on the current status of Ozone Layer Depletion. Due to the overwhelming worldwide efforts, there is an improvement in the past 20 years, the Ozone layer has not depleted further & has reduced. It is expected that by the middle of the next century this will be 100 Percent recovered.

This may happen earlier as well. It depends upon the efforts & consistency of the same. Making laws & regulations is not enough. Effective implementation & public participation is imperative in this regard.

I will share a small experience of public-private partnership here in Sharjah. During one of my morning strolls, I noticed that there are many small passenger ships stationed at the corniche. All were having Solar panels at the top. I enquired about the same from some ship operators. They told me that the UAE government has provided these solar panels to each ship owner, free of cost. The reason of the same is that they were using diesel fuel to light the ship at night & solar panel can light the entire ship for the night without any cost/fuel.

There are approx. 200-300 ships at our Corniche area. The whole of UAE will be having thousands of such small boats/ships. You may easily imagine the quantum of saving of fuel by this initiative. The solar panels are not expensive, there is no upkeep required. They are in place for many years now. On the top of it please consider how much they have restricted the ozone layer depletion.

UAE government is taking many big measures to contain the depletion of ozone layer and this is one of a small but significant silent effort, which goes a long way in meeting such objectives. Dear ambassadors, please do share your experiences in this regard.

    Hi Rohan!

It's to to now know that the effort put together to stop ozone depletion has gained momentum. The the government of the UAE has given out solar panels to sailsmen in an effort to reduce the concentration of pollution going into the atmosphere.

It's true that a joint effort needs to come from both high level officials, but citizens should also play their part in this.

Thank you for your report Rohan, it was most inspiring and informative!
