Dubai Electricity and Water (DEWA) and the Emirates Wildlife Society (EWS), in association with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) organized the 2018 Earth Hour in Dubai on 24 March 2018 UAE Earth Hour 2018 was a resounding success with Dubai reporting record savings of 323 megawatts (MW). The UAE was one among the 180 countries worldwide that participated in switching off non-essential lights and electrical appliances from 8.30pm to 9.30pm to mark Earth Hour. More than the savings during this one hour, the event helped to spread awareness on the need to conserve resources. DEWA confirmed the savings at 32 per cent more than the 244MW reduction during last year's event. The energy savings is equivalent to reducing 140 tons of carbon emissions. Dewa offsets the carbon emissions from Earth Hour activities by exchanging for Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) credits from DEWA's projects in accordance with the Kyoto Protocol of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The results Dubai achieved this year demonstrate how community members can conserve energy and protect the environment to achieve sustainable development. Since participating in Earth Hour in 2008, Dubai has saved 2,385MW energy accumulated in 11 hours over the past 11 years. |

Hello Lohita, UAE seems like putting a lot of its effort toward the commemoration of Earth Hour, being truly responsible for degradation in level of emission (greenhouse gases) and use of electricity wasted.
Raising awareness among people needs a very strong sense of voice and action to persuade them, and this definitely will take people to take participation in together, too
Please share with us if there is any other activity like this one!

Hello Lohita!
This news from Dubai gives us hope that if we can affect people's attitude toward environment, things could really change. In that boundary, I believe that symbolic days and events such as rally does play a big role in gathering attention to this particular issue and bring awareness to people worldwide. However, I also believe that the basic solution would be education so that the new generation would be familiar with environment issues from the beginning!
Thanks for sharing the news :)
