Paris Climate Agreement

Hello Tunza Readers!

You may have heard about the Paris Climate Agreement, this agreement requires countries to set their own targets for reducing emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases to keep global warming below two degrees Celsius. Although the targets not being legally binding, countries must update them every five years. Today, I will be sharing about what Canada has promised to do.

The Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau went to the Paris summit with the target of 30% reduction in emissions from 2005 levels by 2030. Canada announced that it had pledged $300 million to the Mission Innovation initaitive for the clean technology development. Despite this an article by Maclean mentions that the government has not finalized a plan to help meet our 2030 target. The article further states that Canada has committed to expanding oil production from its oil sands. It will be interesting to see what plans will be carried out in the coming years to help achieve the 2030 targets.

I personally think that instead of relying just on the government to create plans, citizens should also be taking action in reducing their own environmental footprints. There are so many alternatives and resources out there to aid us in changing our lifestyles to be more eco-friendly — we just have to be more proactive in seeking them out and actively integrating them into our lifestyles!

Absolutely agree with your last paragraph. Every government has great power to change and control our direction toward environmentally friendly life but it's meaningless without citizens effort. We should remember 'A Little Makes a Lot'. As a member of human society relying on nature, we are responsible to protect our mother earth. Great Work Elliot :)

Hi Elliot! Great report on the Paris Climate Agreement. I liked the explanation about what the Paris Climate Agreement is, and how Canada has participated. It's very important that the world works together as a whole to cope with climate change. It's great to hear that you think that we citizens should also do our part. I agree! Nice work.
