Earth Overshooting Day |
---|
I would like to introduce 'Earth Overshooting Day', which was August 8, this year. During the summer, while I was volunteering in local environmental NGOs, I came upon this.
According to the organization's website, the agenda behind this is as such:
"Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity?s demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceeds what Earth can regenerate in that year. We maintain this deficit by liquidating stocks of ecological resources and accumulating waste, primarily carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Earth Overshoot Day is hosted and calculated by Global Footprint Network, an international think tank that coordinates research, develops methodological standards and provides decision-makers with a menu of tools to help the human economy operate within Earth?s ecological limits. To determine the date of Earth Overshoot Day for each year, Global Footprint Network calculates the number of days of that year that Earth?s biocapacity suffices to provide for humanity?s Ecological Footprint. The remainder of the year corresponds to global overshoot. Earth Overshoot Day is computed by dividing the planet?s biocapacity (the amount of ecological resources Earth is able to generate that year), by humanity?s Ecological Footprint (humanity?s demand for that year), and multiplying by 365, the number of days in 2015:(Planet?s Biocapacity / Humanity?s Ecological Footprint) x 365 = Earth Overshoot Day." I put pictures on how other countries overuse of their existing biocapacity. In regard to Korea, situation is very serious. Korea's ecological footprint is 8 times bigger than its biocapacity. This is higher than the world average, even bigger than neighboring China and Japan. In Korea's case, food waste, individual transportation methods and home energy consumption take most part of ecological foot prints. This factors and Korea's dangerous status in regards to conserving environment are not the general knowledge yet. After getting into this serious information, on-line and off-line awareness campaigns I am planning with my in and out of school club members. There is only one earth, a sanctuary to all species. |

U.A.E's ecological footprint is outrageous. Hmmm

Thanks for sharing with us those interesting statistics. It is alarming to hear that we need more than one nation or Earth to sustain our lives. This means that we are utilizing and exploiting Earth more than its capacity. Thanks for sharing and have a great day!

Thanks for the interesting graph! People normally think Chinese use too much energy and resource but it's surprising to find, in reality, energy consumption per person is really low. Countries with high energy consumption level should try harder to decrease the number! thanks!

I am also very surprised to see UAE's status with ecological footprint...

It is sad to see UAE at the last and it needs 12 such UAE to support and sustain. This shows us the mirror. But good part is that local government is very much aware of this and have been leaving no stone unturned to invest in renewable energy projects, zero carbon cities and promoting sustainable practices by various campaigns and schemes. Thanks for the post.
