India's First Crowdfunded electric bike

by | 02-08-2016 19:45 recommendations 0

India has recently got it's first crowdfunded eco-friendly electric bike "Spero".The bike is really funky.
The funds to built the bike were raised through a campaign on an online crowdfunding platform  by 38-year-old, Manikandan .
He has been working for the last 3 years to design this bike.
The bike is to be released with 3 models .
The lowest costing model can travel about 30 km on a single charge while the other 2 costing more can travel upto 60km and 100km on a single charge.
The bike is powered with 48V Li-ion battery which comes with one year warranty and is made by samsung .The barrtery can chargerd from electricity and can be charged by paddling too .
As per the company, under normal conditions, once the battery is fully charged, the electric bike can run for 100 kms, and one unit is usually spent to charge it fully.Even if we assume Rs 9 per unit of electricity bill , Spero will deliver a knocking punch of only 9 paisa per km expense, or Rs 9 for 100 kms which is very economical and feasible for a country like India.
The three models—e30, e60 and e100—will cost Rs55,500, Rs64,800 and Rs84,900 respectively, which will include cost of delivery.

Features of the Spero
—Three models with 30km/60km/100km range.
𔃈-25 kmph in 10 seconds.
—Rechargeable battery: 20-80% charge in six hours.
—Battery can also be charged while pedalling.
—Includes a smartphone charger.
—Five gears in the electric mode.
—Electronic Display
—Cruise control (where one can lock the maximum speed).
—Weight: 24-30kg.

Tanverjit, it is very interesting to hear that electric bikes are made through crowd funding! The functions are very impressive (like traveling till 100 kms) as well. Hope a lot of people in India could use it as daily transportation. Thanks for sharing!

More the meaning to this project as it's the very output of the crowd funding! If the transportation trend shifts from motorbikes to electronic bikes in some countries with big motorcyclist population, that would be a big help for the environment!

Very cool! I have yet to see an electric bike be implemented widely in the Philippines but now we just recently unveiled a public bike rental service across different cities in Metro Manila. I see quite a number of people use it instead of riding their cars and each small difference definitely counts. I'm sure this is the same case with Spero. Thanks for sharing.
