Keeping with the spirit of the month of Ramadan, I donated over 1000 iftar boxes in different labour camps along with my group Green Globe.
Inspired by the tireless contribution of workers who develop infrastructure and high rise commercial and residential buildings for the community, I conducted these events.
Young Green Globe volunteers gave love to the real heroes who toil day and night to keep the city clean, in the form of a packet of packet of biryani, Samosa an apple, water, a pack of juice, and dates each.
For the last four years we have been carrying out Iftar meal distribution in various labour camps. Every year we give Iftar meals to over 2000 labourers in upto four labour camps.
Similarly this year too we have been continuing the trend. The elated expressions of the labourers and the big grins on their faces made our mission complete.
The first event was inaugurated on 16th june at 5:30pm among 350 workers in Al-Sajja labour camp sharjah.
The second distribution was held in 22nd June 2016 at Al Barajeel Constructions Labour Camp in Sonapur to over 300 labourers residing there.
While the third distribution was carried out on 29th june 2016 in NC Women's labour camp, Sharjah where we distributed another 250 iftar kits.
The events were organized by more than 50 young Green Globe volunteers between the ages 5 - 18. I also made the labourers aware of the importance of not wasting food and segregating recyclable and organic wastes through speeches.
In addition to iftar distribution drive, my group members and the labourers were made aware of the repercussions of using plastic. Awareness was spread by stressing the usage of newspaper bags and jute bags over plastic bags.
Over 500 paper bags were made by the young volunteers in which the Iftar Meals were distributed to the labourers.
I personally feel that more of such events should be organized for the unprivileged.
The event was featured in many dailies circulating in UAE:

Good work Humaid! It's amazing how three different paper companies covered the event! Besides the benevolent donation from your side, I'm more curious on the labour camps. What kinds of people are put into the prison camp? They are not wearing uniforms and there are even children so these questions just popped up in my head..

Plastics are evil to the environment. Used mostly in the food industry, your project has proved otherwise. You have showed the benefit of paper bags in the food industry. Well done and thanks to the media for projecting your event.

By involving these 50 young 'Green Globe' volunteers, you not only inculcated in them spirit of sharing & caring but also taught them environment values(harm caused by plastic and advantages of using paper and jute bags). Good job. Keep it up. Thanks for sharing.
