Dubai is set to House the World's Largest Solar Plant - 5 Gigawatts of Power!

As my interest in renewable energy grows, I envision a positive feedback from nature, if  we all decide to go renewable. Though not an ambassador to UAE, many reports have attracted my attention to the region. By far, UAE is one of the regions to have demonstrated true commitment to the achievement of the global goals.

Dubai has approved a mega solar project which is likely to be the World's largest solar project (beating California's operational 390 Megawatts of power and Morroco's  Ouarzazate with an anticipated 580 Megawatts in 2020) and has the capacity to raise United Arab Emirates total power renewable energy generation by about 25% in 2030 and 7% in 2020.

The approved soon-to-be World's largest concentrated solar power project is expected to have a production total of 5 Gigawatts power generation. The first phase, scheduled for completion in 2020, will produce 1 Gigawatts of power and the second phase, expected to complete in 2030, will generate 5 Gigawatts of power.

More good news, the plant is projected to cut carbon emissions by 6.5 million tonnes each year. Moreover, upon completion, the solar project will be responsible for reduction in utility rates. According to DEW, the power 0.08 USD per Kw/h less than the usual 15 Kw/h rate.

According to the CEO of the Dubai Water and Electricity Authority (DEWA),  Saeed al-Tayer,  the mega solar project will be sited within the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park.  The plant will utilize new solar technology, heliostats and also the typical photovoltaic cells. The heliostats - small mirrors directing large amount of sunlight onto a small area, are necessary to facilitate to easy storage of energy and ability to supply power during and after sunset.

Already, there is an operational 13MW phase since October 2013 and a 200MW second phase will be operational in April 2017.

Tremendously, UAE is proving to be one of the world's fast rising future cities in terms of sustainability and infrastructure. Recently, they demonstrated their advancement in technology and infrastructural strength by printing the first ever usable 3D building.

Minjoo, UAE is using two technologies to develop this mega solar plant. The technologies will give them their expected results. The climate is suitable. Its not really about the severity of the sun but the rays that it cast upon the location. They are building on tower top too

Joshua, it is a good news to hear that the UAE government is putting efforts to transfer its energy source to renewable ones. Since UAE has weather climate that is suitable for solar energy(I do not know specifically, but I just guessed haha), I believe the project will succeed. Thanks for sharing and have a good day!

As UAE resident, my heart swells with pride upon reading such reports by ambassadors from other countries.Yes, UAE is one of the most responsible countries towards environment and is investing in many mega projects like these to meet in future it's 100% of it's demands through clean energy. Thanks for sharing, thanks for appreciating UAE's efforts and vision.

It's great how to UAE is taking such action in the step towards larger usages of solar panels. The statistics you gave are really astonishing such as the carbon emission cut of 6.5 million tons each year. Here in the Philippines, the largest solar-powered mall was recently built. http://business.inquirer.net/210675/210675
The great thing is that more and more countries continue to do similar things. Thank you for the report!
