Recycling past papers

by | 09-05-2016 23:29 recommendations 0

IGCSE is currently on-going and as they say, ?Practice makes perfect?. With these words, I am motivated to practice a lot through doing the past papers. This in turn results in me printing A LOT and using A LOT of papers. This causes me to feel really guilty as paper comes from trees, so I have decided to make a difference by recycling all of my papers.

There are stacks of papers all over the house. Chemistry papers, Physics papers, Biology papers, Mathematics papers, etc. All of those would go to waste after my IGCSE is over. I know for a fact that my friends are also printing past papers and photocopying them resulting in a ton of papers being used up. If I were to stack all of the papers over one another, I would be able to build a tower.

I have talked to my school?s principal about collecting the past papers from other students and bringing it to Bali Recycling, Ubud, to recycle it. This is a much better alternative than throwing all of those paper away in the trash bin as it would lead to the dump yard. By bringing it to Bali Recycling personally, we would know for sure that they would recycle it. Fortunately, my school was very supportive with this idea and was very glad that I thought about recycling.

Bali Recycling is a company that operates an integrated waste management system that focuses on reducing, reusing & recycling (taken from Bali Recycling?s Facebook page). They provide trash collection service which makes it easier for us to recycle our things and they also collect and process hazardous materials, making them the first to be able to provide this service in Bali.

By doing this, I am able to raise awareness to my community on how important it is to recycle as we all have been using up a lot of papers for over the past 3 months due to preparations. I am very happy to know that people are supportive of this idea and I hope I will receive a lot of paper donations from my fellow schoolmates.

    Dear Minjoo,
School life sure does take up a lot of paper so this would be a great way for us to give back to mother nature. We would save trees and also we could earn money from it too. I have already started receiving donations from all my friends. It's a win-win deal for us as they get to release the burden of their heavy papers and they get to conserve the environment while I get to gain more papers for my recycling project and conserve the environment too.

    Dear Heonjun Park,
Thank you for your comment! Yes that sounds like a very good idea. I hope I could open a business like that in the future. I would need to finish school first though and work in a different job to earn money for me to open up that business haha but that sure is a good idea.

    Dear Arushi,
Wow! That is really great! Unfortunately, in my school plenty of the students don't want to have 'second hand books' which is terrible as second hand books are actually better than brand new ones as those books have had a different story before it was handed to the next owner. Also, the higher grades in my school (including myself) often get parts of our textbooks torn apart as we use the same book for 2-3 years but it is still no excuse for us not to recycle books. However, I am currently planning on joining a book swap so I could swap the story books that I have for other books. Thank you for your comment.

Patricia, your report reminds me of the time when I graduated my high school. When the university exams were all over, I still remember the time when we all grabbed our books and paper(which was a lot since we studied for a number of years) and threw away at the back of the pick-up truck. That truck was supposed to take all the used books and recycle them. I hope you succeed in receiving paper donations. Thanks for reporting and have a great day!

I am thoroughly impressed by this initiative. This has just made me look at the thousands of books and papers that are stacked all over my residence. Recycling of paper is a great initiative. Like Obama said, we are the change we have been.waiting for. Make a difference! thanks for sharing

Patricia! Another good way to reduce the amount of paper waste is by opening up a market for second-hand books! Years ago, there was no company that buys back second-hand books, they were just traded in some places like garage sales. Now, there are several nationwide well organized system by a book company that buys back at a cheaper price and sells back to the customers. Heard it's quite profitable! This kind of business helps save tons of papers!

Paper comes from trees so we must not waste any paper. I am so glad to read that you thought of recycling your waste papers rather than tossing to landfill. You are involving others as well from your school in your this green endeavours. Keep it up.
Just like this even at my end when previous academic session was over, I thought of conducting a drive to recycle (give to juniors) previous years text books . Currently this campaign titled'Pick N drop -Text Book Recycling' is going on in our group 'Students for the Earth' and believe me- we have collected more than 1000 books and have benefitted so many students by giving them free the books they need for their new/current session.
We all must do whatever we can do to recycle books, papers or anything which is recycleable. Many a times people wait for someone to initiate. Let's be the change makers rather than change seekers alone.
