1. As reported by United Nations approx. 70 million sharks are brutally massacred every year for Shark fin. 2. Shark fins are very popular in China & Far East for use in Soup & Traditional medicine. 3. A bowl of Shark fin soup costs US$ 100 4. Some traffickers cut off the fins and throw the shark back into the sea, causing the shark to die a slow, painful death. Shark finning is illegal in UAE & some species of sharks are under threat due to unsustainable fishing practices. As introduced by the UN-linked Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), UAE plus eight other Arab countries has signed a new agreement known as Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation of Migratory Sharks in order to protect migrating sharks as efforts continue against shark fin traffickers. Random killing of sharks or any other mammal or bird disturbs the ecological balance & creates havoc for environment that we are facing as a harsh reality. This positive step will help preserve & conserve the environment to a great extent. Thanks for reading. |

Marine conservation is a topic that we should focus on.
Shark fin and other dishes related to sharks are harming these animals as you pointed out.
Banning it doesn't seem to work, despite the fact that many environmentalists are working hard to stop this. I heard that the sharks are captured and (only) their fins are cut out. The other body parts of the sharks are relatively useless, so the leftover alive bodies of the sharks are thrown back into the water. The shark slowly sinks into the water and dies. Then, the carcass deteriorates and is consumed by other species. Terrible! UAE is doing a good job to stop this.

Shark fin dumplings and soup are quite common here in the Philippines especially in Chinese restaurants. Though we don't have a law yet banning shark finning and the sale of shark fins, the best solution anyone can do so far is to simply AVOID the consumption of shark fin. Our collective effort will cut down profits of greedy businessmen and eventually eliminate this huge industry.

Thanks for sharing , Rohan. Any practice leading to disturbance in ecological balance must be monitored and penalised. Another positive step by UAE authorities.

Thanks for sharing, Rohan. Killing top predators in this massive number will cause a disaster in ecosystem. It must be strictly forbidden universally around the world.
