Sampaloc Lake: Threatened Lake of the Year for 2014

by Bam Azores | 07-02-2014 01:06 recommendations 0

We are so excited to announce that Sampaloc Lake and the six other crater lakes of San Pablo City has been chosen as the Threatened Lake of the Year 2014. It's great because there will be lots of attention to our lakes.

The organization that chose it to be the Threatened Lake this year is the Global Nature Fund organization that has the Living Lakes International group. There are more than 100 member  countries in this group.

The seven crater lakes was chosen because of its many problems. Some of the problems are too many fishcages, houses and buildings on the shoreline and the quality of water is not very good anymore.

In the Philippines, there are three lakes that are part of the Living Lakes International,  They are the Laguna Lake, the seven crater lakes of San Pablo City and the Taal Lake in Batangas.  Laguna Lake is the biggest lake in the Philippines at 991 km@ or 91,100 hectares.

Can you give more specific information on the merits of Laguna Lake being the threatened lake of the year? Is Global Nature Fund going to implement some projects there?

I hope the lakes get protection after this step. If we had only looked after the lakes well, then we wouldn't have faced this situation.
