Abu Dhabi?s Solid Gold Biofuel Mercedes Another Dubious Green Development

by | 09-01-2014 02:59 recommendations 0

Are the United Arab Emirate states being over-the-top extravagant when purchasing super luxury cars? Word has it that an Abu Dhabi billionaire is the proud owner of a Mercedes V10 Quad Turbo sports job that has a body made of white gold! Not gold paint, but gold alloy sheet metal. Do these kinds of luxuries find any parallel with the similarly over-the-top ?eco? projects happening in the region, like The World islands and Masdar City?

The specially made car features a newly developed V10 quad turbo with 1,600 horsepower and 2800nm of torque. It is said to be able to go from 0-100km/h in less than 2 seconds, and can go a 1/4 mile in 6.89 seconds running on biofuel. But seriously folks, is it even relevant to talk about biofuel in the face of such an item?

Cost of this ?jewelry store on wheels? is reported to be $2.5 million USD – or enough money to feed the poorer populations of many Arab countries for months.

Oil rich Emirates in the UAE have been known to spend large sums of money on all kinds of extravagant projects including what has been billed as the largest and  most expensive indoor ski complex in the world, Ski Dubai, the world?s tallest building, Burj Khalifa Tower (all 158 stories of it)  Abu Dhabi?s now being constructed luxurious Al Reem Island (said to be a playground for the wealthy) and what may be the only truly environmental sustainable project, Masdar City, which is also in the early stages of construction.

@Konstantinos I agree with your insight :) The dignity comes not from luxurious goods but from the virtuous life style. Fair distribution of wealth is one of them.

In my opinion, Rohan, it is really good that people in Arabic Emirates make the way of living better and invests in tourism. On the other hand, most of the times, people who work to achieve these plans(workers) are usually not treated and payed very well. In addition, i think that Arabic Emirates is not a kind of country that needs serious investments as soon as it owns enough wealth to conserve further generations. However, if those money were spent to people who need them most, such as populations of other Arabic countries, probably Arabic Emirates would attract more attention. After all, the construction of a car or of a high building doesn't really improve the living of typical people.

2.5million dollars is a huge sum and it is not wise to invest in it. But rather it is wise to invest on various projects which uplifts the standard of poor people. Thank you for sharing this news.

I agree with Raunak. The modern architecture built by UAE is an attraction & investment for future. This will be part of heritage in years to come. I simply love this country as it makes our living better.

I take this positively. Coin has two sides. Dubai is # 1 tourist destination. Major revenue of this country is tourism. Upgrading the living standard is a normal thing.

This shows how rich people are spending a lot for luxury and there are poor people out there who don't even have enough to eat and shelter to settle. Thanks a lot for sharing and drawing our attention to this aspect of the society Humaid.

Hmm... 2.5 million USD is not a big deal for loyal families but, we should think about that they should be a good model for their people. It doesn't seem cool at all in this regard. :-(

Car looks nice but according to me is a sheer wastage of money which can be put to better use for the welfare and uplift of society . Nevertheless , thanks for bringing such stories to our attention, Humaid.Thanks.
