Garbage Everywhere... Yuck!!!

by | 04-02-2013 05:41 recommendations 0

In Zambia today, like many other developing countries, you do not have to go far to see trash that is continuously piling our front yards, backyards, main roads, side roads, markets, bus stations and virtually everywhere you go. It is disgusting especially during the rain seasons. When it rains, usually running water washes some of the waste or even dissolves some thereby polluting the nearby

Water sources and environment.
There are some challenges faced in the collection of Garbage in Zambia like many other third world countries. Zambia?s economy depends heavily on industrial manufacturing and agriculture, with different seasons bringing different types of waste for which the authorities should be well equipped to deal with at different times of the year. This poses a challenge as the authorities are faced with technical resources to meet the Garbage collection mandate due to limited financial resources.

Waste management is crucial in every environment as it promotes safe and healthy living and working

environments. Management of waste involves the 3r?s Reduce, Reuse. Recycle. It is important for us the citizens to help the authorities to manage waste by practicing this simple method of the 3r?s. Prevention is reducing or trying to minimize the quantity of waste generated. Reduction of refuse also means reduced burden on collection and disposal of refuse. It also reduces transport cost as they will be reduced loads of refuse that need to be ferried from source areas to dump sites. This is applicable both in homes, manufacturing and service sectors. In the industrial areas, prevention can be promoted by the use of efficient processing systems that minimize waste material. In the homes, there is need for capacity building on ways to reduce the amount of waste generated and these include recycling and re-using products as a way of reducing waste e.g. re-using boxes, refilling, and use of napkins in the homes Instead of disposable pumpers. Re-use is using the product more than once for the same purpose or different purpose. Composting is a good way of disposing bio- degradable waste materials especially in residential areas and at food outlets. The decomposed material can be used in gardens and other agricultural purposes and non-biodegradable waste can be recycled. ITS EASY.

It really feels terrible whenever I see something like the picture above. People should think more about the environment. They could surely make a lot of difference if they thought just a little bit more about mother earth.

Limiting the waste generation, recycling/reuse and then integrated waste management (not just dumping into landfill) are the main issue...thx for the report
