Each One Teach One - A campaign by Nature Bodies

We started this project to protect the forest & wildlife at Achanakmar Amarkantak Biosphere Reserve which is very near to our city. With our basic research we came to know that villagers cut the forest for their livelihood and hunt the wild animals for their food. And due to deforestation there is migration of wild animals toward the villages and city. Through our educational campaign ?Each One Teaches One? we are able to solve the problem with the involvement of students, villagers and forest department.

Achanakmar Amarkantak Biosphere Reserve had been a rich source of Biodiversity but presently it is undergoing a great loss due to lack of awareness of the local community. They cut the forest for making Bamboo baskets, leaf cups, pattle and hunt rats, squirrels, deers, elephant and other wild animals for their food. Through our educational campaign ?Each One Teaches One? we are able to solve the problem with the involvement of students, villagers and forest department. It took 3 years to eliminate the problem

The main problem was the increasing deforestation due to human activities in the forest area. Local people also involve in this due to lack of unawareness, they destruct the forest from the long time back. We the students of ?Nature Bodies? came to know through the newspaper and visited the area. And get ready to solve the problem and then we made the following !--object--ives: 1)To stop deforestation by the involvement of local people. 2)To promote agriculture practice for their livelihood. 3)To aware people not to kill wild animals for food. 4)To improve each one?s green behavior in the forest area.

We are mainly focused on those area which are badly affected by the threats namely Shivatarai, Achanakmar, Chaparwa, Bindawal, Lamani, Ataria, Katami, Surhi, Keonchhi, Amadob, Belgahana, Kurdar, Mithunava goan, Tenganmara, Kenda, Belpath, Khodri, Joghisar, Khongsara, Peparkhuti. In these 20 villages which were badly affected, we selected 30 schools in that area. Initially, our core group visited each area and following data were created: 1)60% of bamboo trees are destructed by the villagers for making baskets. 2)All the species of rats and squirrels are urging of extinct. 3)They cut the forest and sell the products as fuel. 4)They separate green leaves for making ?Donnas? (leaf bowls). 5)Every week 3-4 wild animals are killed by tourist vehicles. 6)Before starting of our project 2 tigers, 6 elephants and uncountable small wild animals were killed because of their migration from forest to villages, it is great loss of natural habitat. Our team decided to solve that problem.

As this project was result internal motivation of students and involvement of the villagers, it took 3 years to eliminate the problem, for getting the results we adopt the following action plan: 1)We started our project in October 2011, we involved 20 villages which were badly affected and we move to 30 schools at those particular villages three days in a week (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). 2)We make some local actors and train them who lead the campaign in that particular school and area. 3)We prepare one wall painting in each school with the help of students ?Green Handprints? which indicate the message of biodiversity conservation of that particular community. 4)?Green Handprints? is an action toward sustainability the five fingers of the handprints represents five !--object--ives of education for sustainable development. I. Knowledge II. Values III. Skills IV. Participations V. Awareness It aimed to improve the agriculture practices in place of deforestation. 5)Educate them through different environmental songs made by the local community people themselves. 6)We developed some self learning materials i.e. Cartoon Strips, which tells the stories of migration of wild animals from forest to village. Through which students move towards the approach of the solution. 7)Village head, Forest guard, Ranger, School Principal, School students, Villagers were involved in our activities namely ?Tree of Hope? through which they developed the idea to solve the problem at their own village.
