Here in the Philippines, fireworks is how we welcome the new year. This year we got to watch the biggest fireworks display in the Philippines held in the City of Makati. It was awesome!!! The display went on for about 20 minutes and must have cost a lot of money. But in the morning it was sad to see all the smog in the air. The air was grey and there was a strong smell of gunpowder. I began to think of how bad all those fireworks might be for the environment.
But here where we live in the City of San Pablo, two friends decided to hold a lantern festival . For just P150.00 or US$3.00 you get a paper lantern that has a small candle at the bottom. When you light the candle, the heat makes the paper lantern fly up in the air. They had about 3,000 people light up those lanterns so it was a beautiful thing to look up in the sky. Then I thought about what would happen to those paper lanterns. Maybe they would just fall right back down from the sky. It would mean someone would have to clean it up. But I think that is better than all those fireworks.

That's a great idea Bam! I would love to see the result of the research.
If you are chosen as a delegate of 2012 Global Youth for the Environmental Forum,
You can have a chance to do presentation before so many environmental activists from all over the globe. I wish you gooooooooood luck!!

Why don't we Eco-Generation youth make a statement about the use of fireworks in celebrations. Let's research it and see how much fireworks in our countries and maybe it can be used for better things like what Guru Vishnu said to maintain parks and for treeplanting projects or many other things we can do with the money people spend on buying fireworks.

Its a unique way to bring joy --- without bursting crackers and polluting the environment.

Burning crackers is bad for our environment. We can use that money to maintain the public parks or we can spend that money for tree plantation projects too.

Yup! When you light up fireworks, it's like burning money and it's bad for the environment too. I was thinking if all the money spent on fireworks was just collected it could be a big help to the victims of the Typhoon Sendong that hit the Philippines last month where more than a thousand died and many homeless
