Building the bridge

When the pregnant clouds decide to go in labour, it is actually a good thing because it brings comfort not only to the cloud itself but the other clouds around it. The labour of the cloud could be likened to rain that falls. I am a big fun of rain and if you live in a country that is as hot as Ghana, you would agree with me. When it rains, it brings comfort with its cool breeze. You could even decide to sleep without turning on the fan or air condition because the breeze of the rain would just be perfect.

However in Ghana, rain is perhaps only beneficial to the rich. Due to lack of development, corruption and lack of sense of humor on the part of the people in charge (government), the average Ghanaian has to go through a hell of horrific experience when it rains. I have experienced this horrific hell on several occasions and the situation has not improved by 0.1% till date. I am writing from the capital city, Accra and if I can complain like this I cry for those in the rural areas. Most of the roads are untarred and this make it very difficult to move around when it rains; the entire place becomes muddy. This situation is further worsened by the fact that gutters are also not constructed to allow the rains to flow through a proper drainage system and this leads massive flooding whenever it rains. Even with the gutters constructed, they are so choked with rubbers and other filth that virtually makes water impossible to flow through them whenever it rains. This situation of choked gutters made me take an action to help my community. Around Gbetsile Junction (a town in Accra), I came across a choked gutter and decided to desilt it. It was very difficult because not only was it choked with filth but it was very smelly as well. But for the love of Mother Nature, we dare to do anything to help save her. After the desilting exercise I undertook, a bridge would be constructed of the gutter. Work is in progress and I will definitely update this story when the bridge is finally constructed. The construction of this bridge will enhance the flow of water when it rains and prevent the flooding of the area since it is a hotspot for flooding.

Green Cheers!

    Hello Justice!
    It's your SJ mentor.

    Warm greetings from Korea.
Thank you for sharing your fabulous experience with us.
Excessive rainfall could cause problems such as flooding, a huge amount of water-carried sediments making dumping ground at lower reaches.
A proper drainage system must be applied and dams to collect wastes are needed.
It's good to know that you contribute to recover your community.
Please let us know when the construction of bridge is finished.
I appreciate your commitment to Eco Generation.
Hope things are fine with you.

    Sincerely,
    SJ mentor.

Thank you for sharing your amazing job, and concerning of people of Ghana.
I was surprised by your work, and I would like to say thank you for doing such a good deed.
It is sad to hear that the rain feels like gift only to the rich ones,
and for other ones it becomes a such a terror.
I hope that proper road and gutter construction are carried soon,
so that everyone can enjoy the fresh temperature in rainy days.

    Thank you once again.

    Best wishes,
    WooJoo
